hey guys

was thinking on building a snorkel with stainless steel any idea or pics on how to ??
and where the best place to get parts from?

seen a nice job at the 4x4 show i think 1 up from where mr chezzy were

Get an exhaust shop to weld up pipes and bends as you require for inside engine bay.

For outside, I used two pieces, one that runs along the guard and another that goes up the A pillar. I had the exhaust shop weld studs onto these legths of pipe at apprpriate places to bolt the piece to the guard and I drilled through the A pillar to mount the other bit.

For the corners I went to a truck air cleaner place and bought a 90deg. bend and 2x 45deg. bends. In brisbane I went to Brisbane Air Cleaner Services. There'll be similar places in Melb.

That French job is very neat the way it stays out of the way inside the guard.
Make sure you use a big enough diameter pipe as the longer it is the more air friction/restriction there is.

here are a couple pics of my custom snorkel job on my mav shorty.. i got an exhaust place to get me bends and welded to pipe the shape i wanted. the welded on flanges to screw fix the set up to my A pillar. i painted mine black to go with my colour scheme but u could easily do the same thing in stainless. also note my snorkel faces backwards as i run on straight lpg. on a deisel or petrol u would just get a snorkle head and attach. all up cost me about 160 and a day stuffing around. also note where i ran my snorkel through the gaurd..not the hole lower down the inner guard...but straight through the inner as u can see in the pic

so basically you moved the whole lot up toward the fire wall
how did you cut the inner and outer guard?

I made one out of 100mm stainless, theres pictures on my page below, no welding, just used some black rubber elbows.

cutting the hole where i decided to run my snorkel was the job from hell.. cutting the inner burnt out 3 hole saws and ended up using a grinder and air hacksaw. then i noticed where i cut the ineer hole from the engine bay had a second skin which is actually a reinforcing for the body. so i took the guard off and sliced the hole, then plated up the body to strengthen back where i had cut. the outer guard was cut with a nibbler.

i decided to position where i did as i wanted the most direct route to the throttle body. i kept the air swirler in my set up. in a deisel u would have to either keep the precleaner set up or use a better secondary cleaner if u went this way..

i just pulled the gaurd off (gq) put masking tape on it, marked out where i wanted the hole - the hardest bit - with texta, drilled a hole and then ran the jigsaw around it, had to cut from both sides due to flared gaurd, easy as pie.
Ive got a 4 1/2 inch hole though, wasn't keen on buying hole saws $$$

where about did ya guys get the still pipes from??
and the rubber sleaves?

I made the one for my Bronco out of 75mm stainless pipe and rubber bends. Used a 90 degreee bend coming out the side panel then 2 45 degrees bends to get up to where the snorkel snout sits on. The rubber bends came from a truck parts shop. The holes through the panels were done with lots of drill holes, then finished off with a die grinder bit. The cut edge was then covered with a strip moulding from Clark Rubber. End result looked great.
