leaking T'case

Post by benito »

i have a small leak coming from my transfer case, and another from my rear diff, both of which dont seem to be dropping too much, however its enough for them to be getting fairly wet outside (the car is a 2000 x/cab hilux)... the thing is, i am going to moreton island in a couple of days and was wondering whether u think its urgent to get them taken care of? or should i take anything with me incase? I dont plan on doing any major water crossings, so that shouldnt be a problem... but i only just noticed the leak of the t'case and its got me slightly worried. thanks for ur help.

both my diffs and the t-case have been leaking for at least a couple of years, from what u described similar to yours - a coating of oil on the outside, not actually dripping much. just as long as its serviced regularly, ie keeping oil levels up, i dont think its too much of a drama. mines a 98 lux. im no expert or anything but havent noticed any detrimental effects yet.

have fun at moreton. was there in september and the road across the middle from tangalooma was farken terrible. extreemy soft. even with my new 31 bfg at's at 15psi got stuck numerous times but ive since heard that the rain has made it better again. was good fun sitting in the aircon as my 8 mates pushed, getting covered in sand and diesel smoke. did have a lot crap in the tray which probably didnt help.

must have been really bad that year, when i went over we had two stock standard sr5 lux's with the road terrain tyres and a 94 single cab with near bald desert duellers (do these things actually ever go bald!) and we had no trouble at all getting through. the single cab got bogged once getting into the campsite, but it was loaded right up at the time so we werent surprised.

I would take some spare oils with me and check the levels after a while or after any crossings. I don't think many people would be changin oil seals while on holidays anyway
