Just curious as to what u guys would run when biulding a truck to the wheelbase u desire?
Not particularly buggies but more pre biuld modded rigs....
wat wheel base would u lengthen / shorten ur rig to??

Well at the moment i have a wheelbase of 92 inches.
I have a cab/ chassis with a Wheelbase of 116 inches.
nieither of these i like the sound of.
I want about 106 inches.
So would it be easier to lengthen the SWB or shorten the Ute chassis???

well cheezy lengthens swb models there would probably be around the same amount of work but on a long wheel base you would have to cut the chassis or this might be better prob ring cheezy he would know

Mine is 116 inches and that is the standard long wheel base length and I have had no problems with ramp over and like it as is. I reckon 110 would be better but not to short as to become a problem if you were keen to shorten it.

And when I SAS it Im moving the front diff foward 2-3 inches so it will really be long then!
Dont know if I want to fawk around too much with fuel tank and stuff at the back to shorten it.
I have solved some of the ramp over angle problems by doing a 40mm drivetrain lift and custom crossmember for the transfer.

I tend to think that 100" is sweet for a "small tyred" project. (up to maybe 37") but over that and I think that more wheelbase is definitely an advantage.
rampover isn't everyhting though.
My G has a 112" wheelbase and sits pretty low, but is very "clean" underneath - nothing below the chassis rails, which are perfectly flat between the wheels. I spend lots of time on them, but a car is never more stable than when it is sitting on the chassis, and I am rarely stopped due to dragging the chassis. Sure, more lift would cure any dragging, but I am nit willing to trade off the stability or other consequences of more lift. It climbs pretty well too, not withstanding excessive antisquat and inadquate power.
It certainly outclimbs 80 series landcruisers with a very similar wheelbase, principally because there is very little weight behind the rear axle on a G.
I would stay at 116 for the ute. It depends very much on the type of driving you are doing, but personally, I would rather have 116" with no weight behind the rear axle for climbing than 106" with weight past the rear axle. (for the same load and load space)
make sure it is nice and clean underneath, and maybe build some nice sliders under the sills and just push it over anything you hang up on, and then outclimb the smaller cars.
sooner or later, you will always find a climb that you could get up if you had more wheelbase. (hehehe ljxtreem) but there is always a tradeoff for maneuverability too.
Plus it must be way less work (and more legal too) to keep your stock wheelbase.

i find it very workable and stable on most things.....
though there is the odd step i come across that no matter how hard i try i cant get a line up and others more stock than me can get up....
wheelbase is very very hard to pick...
i might go to about 110 next time with the bigger rubber

Hey Jeff, its easier to cut the long wheelbase down to length rather than lengthen the short wheelbase, and ive seen your welding.
i sit at 116, it can get abit tight in places but it is very stable and i love it
