What Clutch for Gu Ute???
What Clutch for Gu Ute???
After some motor upgrades my clutch is slipping.
It is a 1800 pound clamp pressure Aftermarket (Direct Clutchs in Brisbane) unit.
I would like to know what every one else uses and recommends.
And the costs of clutchs.
Cheers Heath.

4.2 Garret Turbo, Water Air intercooler, etc, etc, etc. So good power. The clutch is around 25,000 kms old. The truck is fitted with rockhoppers so the clutch does not get abused offroad and onroad for that matter. The clutch slip is clamp pressure related not that the clutch is worn out.
I have ordered a New One from direct clutchs that they claim is 3600pounds clamp pressure so time will tell.

Speaking with Steve from Direct Clutch...
Standard Nissan clutch is 1,600 pound.
The one I just got is a custom Direct pressure plate is 2,200 pound and is really nice for daily driving.
Their super heavy pressure plate (actually a twin diaphragm) that they make for winch challenge trucks is 3,200 pound and Steve doesn't recommend it for DD as they are too harsh and very heavy pedal action.

Rather stupid question that I never thought I would have to ask is 'How do you exactly know that your clutch is slipping?'
If you can sit at the lights and let the clutch out with no accelerator and it drives foreward, does this mean it's still good?
I have a 4.2 diesel GQ N/A and coming back from Gatton on the weekend with one motorbike on the trailer I was overtaken by an old falcon towing a full horse float uphill.
I dropped a gear and still couldn't get any decent progress! I was thinking that maybe my clutch is letting go but I'm too sure as to wether my engine was revving alot.
Any thoughts?

1. Revs increase without vehicle accelerating. Particularly noticeable when going uphill in 5th... then will start happening in 4th... then 3rd etc etc...
2. It smells
3. At a standstill with handbrake engaged, Put in 5th gear, rev to about 2,000 rpm and let the clutch out. If it stalls immediately you have a bit of life left. If it runs on it is on it's way out. Don't do this too much as it will quickly stuff your clutch.

The bad boys usually run Daikin safari tuff clutches. Pro Comp GU, Kym Bolton, Chunk, Bevan Butler all run and swear by them. Expect to pay $450-$500 and you ain't gonna have any problems. The Turbo Dsl model also fits petrols.
Greg at Dobinsons sell them in Brisbane and we (Pro Comp) can do them in Melb.
