LPG and range
I have some possible long treks coming up next year so I am thinking about getting my TB42 SWB Maverick converted to dual fuel.
Coupla questions for the board:
- does this usually result in cutting down your petrol tank capacity to make room for the LPG tank? What are the usual tank options?
- any shop recommendations for an economical supply/fit on the north of or in inner Melbourne?
I want both the extra economy of LPG and the added range of having increased total tank capacity.

This is not legal advice.
I have my tank fitted where my old petrol tank was and on the drivers side aproxamently under the rear seat I have a 40 odd litre petrol tank. I get about 300 to 350 k's on gas round town with about 80L of gas. I have often thought about fitting a second tank inside. I like the scuba tank styles but don't want to loose any of my already limited storage area. Gas is a bitch why do all the tanks have to be round??!!?
If you want range then you would really have to fit
a tank in the car and keep the existing petrol tank.
One option would be to get hold of the falcon wagon LPG tanks that
they use in the cabs. 3 scuba tanks that can hold 70 ish litres.
You should be able to sit that on the floor of the cargo area and build a platform over it - IIRC they are 150mm high, if you do that you would get a cargo barrier so you stack up high.
That is what I would be looking at - I am after a set of those tanks
for my rangie but I haven't found them in Brisbane, I have really looked all that hard thought.

The energy content of LPG is lower than that of petrol (which is lower again than diesel) so you'll never travel as far on a litre of LPG as you will on a litre of petrol (all other things being equal.
) Add the "80%" rule for tank capacity, and the only benefit you'll get from LPG is lower pump price and cleaner burning. (Higher octane is a bonus if you want to do the work to gain some benefits.)
Have you checked out the availability of LPG where you're heading? Bite the bullet and swap in a diesel.
Cheers,
Scott
PS Is it my imagination, or is the Chimp not such a frequent visitor these days? He's not spending time with is SO, is he?

have 2 lpg tanks fitted to my mav.. one in position of original patrol tank and one in cargo area. 90 usable each. check out members section under vipers mav shorty. no petrol at all.. straight lpg. 180ish litres lpg gets me 700ks. loads of power too.
biggest problem i have had has been catching my lpg tank when wheeling..even with the 5 inch lift. and body lift wont get tank higher.. working on making lower tank removable for wheeling..can refit when touring etc..

im getting about 350kms out of $35 worth of gas in my TB42 SWB so its not too bad.
its better than my V8 MQ and its better than my old diesel too.
i wont recomend a tank in the back of a GQ....
MQ sure y not, but GQs are too pretty inside
mine has a 40-50 litre tank petrol tank under the passenger side rear seat and its a wierd as shape... not sure on range of it as i dont use it much....
LPG tank under the back.

yeh,
on the way home back to sydney from melbourne, i noticed that coming in to geelong and south western melobourne it was about 50 - 60 centre per litre...
but up on the hume HWY in cragieburn area heading north it was about 36 centre per litre....
then the rest of the way up the free way was high 40's.
up here its about 45 cents/ litre atm..

You will use about 25% more gas to travel the same K's as on petrol
eg 100ltr petrol to travel 500km would = 125ltr gas to travel 500kmif you have duel fuel you will use more petrol per km than you are doing now as the timing has to be advanced to run gas it wold be better to run one or the other not both

thats correct,
thats also y gas is cheaper to run.
it is less than half the price, but only 1/4 less efficiant.
so u come out 1/4 of the $$ on top in the end.
if LPG was 75 cents per litre it would hardly be worth doing as u would save almost nothing
