Hello group!
This spring i will do something about the gearing on my Patrol MK -84. I have a few choices:
1. Move rear axle backwards and mount a second transferbox. I have to use a non-direct driven gearbox. It will give me good crawling capabilities if it works out.
Pros: No so costy. Low gearing. 20 fwd gears instead of 10.
Cons: Will still thoose open axles.
2. Mount Volvo C303 portals. Theese axles costs about the same as lockers for my stock axles. 7,16:1 R&P. Move axle backwards.
Pros: PORTALS and they have air-lockers.
Cons: Costy, but they are have lockers.
If i go for the first soloution, what transfer gearbox would you recommend? I will go 38,5" tires or at least 35".
/Magnus

Dual tranferboxes?
Dual tranferboxes?
Nissan Patrol MK SD33 -84
my crawl is ok when i bump the idle down and im on 38's.....
going duel transfer i spose is very doable..... In a LWB would be great.
actually here is a though for ya.
LWB MQs have a seperate transfer case with a driveshaft between the back of the box and the transfer....
technically, u could put a standard direct drive transfer off MQ in. then run a shaft to a LWB MQ transfer and then run the shafts off of that.
U would ba able to take the mounts off the LWB chassis for the second transfer and so no welding there i doubt....
then just get a longer front shaft and a shorter rear shaft....
id suggest moveing the wheelbase back to do this though... as the shaft will be too short for a SOA SWB......

4.6s in the diffs and im running a 5 speed naturally asperated deisel box, which has the lowest ratios from factory...
im running factory ratios, the lowest possible from factory parts. MQs cant get hoppers so im stuffed unless i go turbo700 auto with a cruiser transfer with hoppers......
but i find for the moment its quite good with the low idle anyway....

yes thats correct, u can get 4.8s but they are few and far betweem and are worth a packet....
u wouldnt break a rear in a hurry ( u need housing as well ) but if u broke a front, which is easy to do, and more like with the smaller and greater number of teeth, it will cost u a bomb to replace, and be hard to find replacements.......
4.6s work well enough and are common and maintain strength.
