GQ Vs Toy

Post by Maggot4x4 »

Ok, After the events of yesterday I now have a choice to make. Should I go with GQ Diffs, Do the Toyota Conversion, or just fix what I have and hope it doesn't happen again?

Please explain the reasoning behind you vote.

I know this has been done before but it is always good to get fresh ideas.

The truck needs to be strong enough to run any tyre size from 33" to 37".

I went with the toy conversion.

reasons:
better selection of ratios.
Keep rover axle housings. (better ground clearence under centre)
Keep rover patten wheels. (had lots of.)
parts available any where.
good cvs available.
easy conversion.
Front is hi-pinion (helps with drive shaft angle.)

I went Nissans

Reasons
4.3's 4.6's or 4.88's
Very strong CWP
get common 6 stud pattern and get better offset rims cheaper
extra width, more stability
get stronger everything standard and costs less
shave the diff casings (like I did) and keep same ground clerance as RR housings
front diff is hi pinion, but not reverse cut so strong in reverse unlike reverse cut gears

I now run 35's with confidence

Since we're back on the toy conversions (I see the last thread has been bumped), what sort of power can a toy centre take. I know you can build these up with 35 spline axles and such as well as use longfeilds/profeilds etc but how much power can the actual centre take as with all the extras I would see this as the weak part of the axle assembly.

Michael, I see you running the 215kw hsv motor and as far as I'm aware you are running the toy conversion. How do you find it handles all the power and torque from this motor?

I am still running RR with Maxi-Drive everything and Haultech CV's. I have 35" ET's and have only lunched a rear ring and pinion with the current set-up during the Gold Coast 2000.

I know the guys at Haultech pretty well and they assure me that the Hilux centre in the RR diffs is the go. I am pretty sure that is what Tony (Ruff) is running but I'm not sure if Rod is. You can use the RR axle housing, axles and carrier and only use the Toy ring and pinion and third member housing. In fact I thing Sam (Strangerover) has the same set-up in the Lockless Monster. Heaps stronger but with lots of under axle and under pumkin clearance.

toy centres handle the power no problems.
IMO the toy hypoid design is far stronger than the rover centre bevel.

Hi from what Ive just read above the Toyota seems easy. Love yo know about axles into CV'S etc.

The front toyota diff centre is the same on the Hilux as in the 75 and 60 series Landcruisers. the rear is the different I'm advised. Our racers here in Darwin are running very strongly on Hilux/Cruiser fronts. I know two teams running around 400 hp and heard of only one of them doing a pinion on the front. Mud is like brown hell.

I know two Top Gun (unlimited) lads running without probs. One ran his Wild Thing with a twin carby tunnel rammed 350 Chev ?550 - 600 hp. Now running 350 twin carby 6/71 blower now problems yet. The other 454 Kendrick race preped with 150 hp NOS. total 650 - 750 hp. Only done CV's.

Must love the ponies.

AFAIK Hilux front and rear are 8" crown wheel, same as front 80 and 100 series (but 80 & 100 series are hi pinion). 60 series front and rear are 9-1/4" crown wheel.
