Put it this way, there put them in cars for drag racing because there as strong as 9"Ford, are cheaper to get hold of & modify, come in a great range of ratios & light compared to others.
They're not indestructable & I don't think there is a diff made that is!
99 % of people won't have problems, those that do will be stuffing more than just diffs!

I think most people break them in the rear of Hilux's mainly due to Suspension set ups. Hilux's are bad for hopping in the rear and no diff centre likes this. I have broken lots. Like 20 or more over the years but most were due to hopping(Axle Wrap). After going Coils in the rear of my hilux i never had a problem. I have broken one in the rear of my Tube Buggy and that was Poor set up. My Poor set up. But since then i should have broken at least 10 more with the way i drive. I Broke both rear axles the other week and the centre is fine.
I broke three 4.88s in the rear last year and one in the front. I've already broken one front 4.5 this year as well. That last one was not the centre's fault as my front uni bound. Yes, I can be hard on my gear. And all those were with a 4 link rear end.

I understand that Gonads runs one with 44's
V6 centres have a larger thicker pinion and thus are considered stronger. They will fit into a 4cyl housing but you will need a grinder

I think i have broken teeth off 3 pinions in the last ten years behind a commodore v6 auto . Was still drivable with caution but i saw one where the rear broke so the owner put it in 4wd and drove on regardless.
you could spin the pinion without the gears touching the crownwheel.
I run 4.375 centres with detroit locker in rear and torsen in front 31in tyres.
I suspect the breakages were due to the backlash in the locker.
I have not broken one since I put in the v8.

An ARB locker is a definite upgrade so the week point will then be the C&P.
You seen these pics Frank?
These snapped within 2 seconds of each other.
The Crown and Pinion Outlasted these axles. And i know Scott 83lux snapped one today also.

Yeah I did Tony and I wondered the same thing (why the C&P didn't go first) but I think if you did a poll you would find axle breakages are very rare compared to centre or C&P failures.
I measured a Lux centre and compared it to an IFS Paj centre and their almost identical but the Mitsu has a much stronger (thicker) C&P.
Several Lux rear diffs (centre's & C&P) have grenaded in my club only running 31" & 32"s.
If you think a Hilux 8" rear diff is strong then have a look at a rear 9" Paj then a 9.5" later model Paj then a GQ/GU Patrol
