i thought it was 'orto', but cant find any record of that user name, anyway
Rodney
have a t700 with aftermarket cooler, want to fit an electronic oil temp gauge
what would be the spot you suggest for the sender.

a bloke i spoke to reckoned take the sump off of the trans and braise a nut to the sump and screw the sender into that.

was thinking of putting it in the lines to the cooler but the sender is to big to sit in the lines, if anything would block fluid flow....

any thoughts?

Im, interested in this Ihad one setup in the cooler but i feel it wasn,t giving a proper reading ,.

I've got one of Rod's temp guage kits fitted to my 92 efi GQ, as he explained it to me he positions the sender so that it reads the trans fluid as it comes out of the torque convertor where it is at its hottest. He told me that positioning it elsewhere will give a false reading of the oil temps being produced by your auto.
Over Xmas towing our caravan heading North from Yarra Glen to Yea/Seymour on the uphill stretch in 2nd gear full throttle the temps got to just over 100C with the torque convertor unlocked. At the top and with the torque convertor manually locked in 3rd gear the temps dropped pretty quickly to 80c then over the next 10kms or so they dropped to around 60c. It was a relatively cool day about 20 degrees c.
Having the manual lockup on the torque convertor has made a mile of difference to auto temps, you can see the temps drop after it has been locked. The gauge is fantastic as it's the only way you can monitor what your auto is actually doing. Rod said that on Patrol's by the time you see the atf overheating light come on you have probably already damaged your auto so the guage is a much better diagnostic tool.
I had Rod fit his extreme valve body, temp guage kit, manual lockup for the torque convertor and change to synthetic trans fluid for my auto and I'm very happy with the results.

Isn't like $200 just for the Synthetic Tran fluid? What do you do for top ups, or is this a thing of the past after the Extreme makeover?

Hi it's Rodney here from Wholesale Automatics. As Andrew explained the best place to monitor the transmissions oil temperature is as it comes out of the transmission before it gets to the cooler. We fit sender units in most cooler unions but the T/700, T/400 and T/350 unions are to small so we run a 3/8 T/Piece with the sender unit attached.

I don't like the idea of drilling holes and then bronzing some sort of union into the sump. These pressed metal sumps don't like to be bronzed as it can start a series of cracks( Also make serving more difficult ). The other reason why I don't like the sender unit to be in the sump is that the oil that you want to take a reading of has already gone through the cooler and has mixed with the oil in the sump ( Which is the coolest spot in the transmission ). Most important thing of all is to measure the temperature of the oil instantly and as it comes out of the transmission and not 2-3 minutes later from the sump where it will also be showing you a lower reading.
