Second Alternator

Post by Maggot4x4 »

Ok I have worked out where to put the brackets, but what I need help with is how to wire it up.

All help is appreaciated.

I thought I would start a new thread as not to hijack the other one.

Cheers,

Edit: That's 1000 posts, argh.

Just thinking that it should be OK wired up in parallel with the other alternator.

One wire from ign switch to excite field and another heavy wire to battery +ve. The other terminal is for a tacho.

I do not think you can do this. before fitting my second alternator I did a lot of research.
Several marine sites talked about synchronised dual installations, and that you need a sophisticated regulator, and each alternator has to be exactly the same.
Think about it, how will the regulator of one alternator sense battery charge when another alternator is throwing 14.2 volts in.
On reflection, I think you would have to bypass the internal regulator of both alternators and connect them to an external regulator.
I think the other issue is the back current on the diodes.
I will stress here that I am not an electrician, but have fitted a second alternator , but as completely different circuit to a second battery. I wasn't game to tempt fate.
I think the best place to find out is marine alternator suppliers as they sometimes apparently link two together.
