Shockie bending stuff
Shockie bending stuff
Ive bent two rear drivers side shockies in the past 2 months. One was an old Rancho 5000, so I got 2 new rear Toughdog foam cells put in. Sunday night i bent the new one, on the same side.
1st rancho bending experience happened when i was offroad thrashing around a bit. Understandable.
2nd Toughdog bending experience happened when i was driving through a carpark and clipped a kerb doing a right hand turn.
Why is it doing this? And why is it always the rear drivers side shockie only? Is it a coincidense? Ill try and post a pic up this arvo.
Whats the chance of getting it covered under a toughdog warranty?

ie topping or bottoming out to often makes baby shocks cry.![]()
Could just be a coincidence that it just happened on the rear right.
Just a guess though ...
Hmm they should be the right length, had Opposite lock supply and install them.
The strange thing is that it happened just while i hit a kerb, not when we were out at mundairing 4wdriving up there. Was doing some pretty hardcore stuff up there aswell.

First things first;
Do you have a lift or is it standard?
If lifted how much?
Do you have Adjustable Panhard rods?
What size tough dogs went in? As Bazzle said if they are 43mm dia they need spacers between the shocks and the axle side of the shock mount and Manellis forgot to install them on one side when they fitted my shocks so don't think the other mob wouldn't do the same.
Has the vehicle ever been in a major prang?

If the tough dogs are large diameter, the lower bump stops should have been trimmed back about 10 mm to prevent the shocks from hitting them, and even with the spacers fitted to the lower shock mounting bolts my tough dog adjustables still touch the rear springs, hope this was some help,

I'd be looking at your panhard rod. 4in lift is fairly big for standard stuff. Does the vehicle tramline a fair bit on the road. If so check the bushes on your panhard. With a 4in lift your panhard will be pulling the diff to the right all the time. IE. the drivers side, putting more stress on your right rear shock.

????????????????????????????
I think youll find it doesnt affect any thing in that area. All it does is have body biased to left, no tension.

Adj panhards
Speaking of adjustable Panhard rods, how do you set/align them? Yeah I know, turn the screw/nut, how do you know when they are aligned?

Sitting on the level.
Measure in from each inner guard to the tyre or rim. Adj so spacing even.
If youre not sure front rear same put on alignment machine to check for crabbing.

So what stops the diff from moving sideways if it gets a hit from the side. ie. if you clip the edge of the roundabout????????????? Hence I mentioned to check his panhard bushes.

Sparky from the pics it looks like the springs are too long for the shocks. IE when the shocks are fully extended the springs still have far too much compressed force in them and are pulling the pistons off the rods.
Id remove both shocks and jack the chassis up until the springs just get loose on the perches. Then measure the length from the top shocker mounting pin to the bottom one and compare that to the open length of your shockers.
