info about 4runner's

Post by zzzz »

Hi,

Can someone give me a few links to information on 4 runners.
My folks are looking at buying a 4 wheel drive and the 4 runner seems like a good bet.

They want something of a reasonable size (no landcruiser or patrols) that they can take down the beach, chuck their dogs in the back all wet and sandy, and drive up into the vic high country and keep up with the jones's in their new landcruiser. :)

I am thinking a 4 runner with just enough lift to clear 31" MTR's and a rear ARB air locker would be perfect. The IFS front end is not the best for flex, but they won't be doing anything too full on with this rig.

What is the best year to look for?
What is the best engine? diesel, v6?
Are they all IFS front end?
What does it take to fit 31's?

Any other ideas would be great.

cheers

Z

Hey Zach,

I'm selling a 95 Mitsu Pajero 3.5DOHC, Very tidy, Fully optioned including 31"s and factory rear difflock. Price is negotiable if you're interested.

Top family tourer and will definately keep up with a new cruiser with the factory difflock.

What about a smurf? Turbo diesel....

All after 86 i think were IFS.

It takes standard suspension to fit 31's.... I'd recommend 32's which only just rub on full artic with standard suspension. Would be no rubbing with any of the following: trimmed guards, 50mm suspension (wound up IFS and new rear springs), or 50mm body lift.

2.8s are fuel econ and great offroad, and on trips, especially if you turbo one.. petrols are also ok.. Surfs are also allright..

All the Series 2 body shape ones are IFS, 89 onwards. and i think certain models of the old shape were IFS..

to fit 31's a 2" suspension package will fit ok..

to fit 32's you will get ALOT of scrubbing without at least a 2" suspsension and a fair bit of gaurd trimming, or body lift!

TRUST ME! i know! they scrub on full lock on a flat driveway, and offroad do alot of scrubbing... I have put up with it, cause i only use 32's offroad and 31's onroad. the 31's would do fine, especially if you get lockers also!

Interesting, I had a first gen IFS 4runner..... With standard sagged suspension 31's fitted with no scrubbing ever.

With OME rear springs and standard front, 32's went on ok. They would wedge themselves up in the guard on full articulation in the back. On the front they only just hit the plastic chassis/body cover on full lock.

31's are the limit for the rig, as they want it for driving around mostly and have to drive from anglesea up to the vic high country so it needs road manners.

If they fit without a lift then that is even better. A small 2" lift from ARB would be ok as well. :)

2.8 diesel - did they come turbo from the factory?
IFS sucks but can it be made to work ok?

Only arb rear locker - they would never use the front one I don't think.

thanks for the info...

Fair nuff, mines 2nd Gen though, could make the differance? Mine scrubs REAL bad...

When ya say ya had OME's in the back, and standard front, your torsion bars would have been wound up to match the rears.. :)

No the only the new ones with the a turbo diesel from factory.. That is not to say there isn't heaps of 2.8 TD getting about but they are all aftermarket. Some got the 2LT ( 2.4 TD Import Engine ) put in by people but this was a bad idea and not factory.

Yeah could be a difference in the body shape. A friend of mine has a 2nd Gen with 3" body lift and he fits 33's easy.

When we put the rear springs in we didn't actually need to raise the torsion bars. It was roughly level. They weren't far off standard height springs. Although the torsion bars could have been raised slightly before I bought it.
