hello hookedonsuzi

hows it going
it would be a great engine for your ln46 ??
guess u have the 18r engine now with four speed ??
get urself a complete st141 corona 1984-86
or celica
use the engine computer & wire harness from that
get urself g52 etc 5speed & transfer case & 22r bellhousing
you can buy the engine mount brackets for chassis genuine
from toyota retail around $45.00 each
than its all yours remove on running gear & retro fit the new running gear
the only thing with the 22re injection systems is it grouped injection fires four injectors at ones.

but still a good engine to upgrade ur old 18R-c

the other option if you like is the twin cam 18R-c dual side draft carbys from AR60 celica i think it was.
less work would bolt strait in
just have to up date you fuel pump (electric) & maybr extractors 2 1/4 in exhaust ??

Hi there

I've almost done the exact same conversion to my 83 RN. Motor is from early 87 avante. Exhaust next week and s'all done.

IMO you are way better off getting a complete RT142. I bought my engine completely recon with everything brand new but unassembled. I got ECU with it but only about 1/4 of the harness. If you get engine only you will encounter a couple of probs as there are 2 types of rt142. 84/85's were made in Australia and had borg warner diff etc. where as the 86/early87's were made in japan and the has toyota IRS and other bits n pieces. Also 22RE's are different.. 3 vs 4-pin TPS, 2 vs 3-plug ecu... among other things. The later Japanese ones are a pain in the ass to find as i had to get EFI harness and stuff had to find one up in Perth.

Regarding gbox the G52 is a heaps better box than the 4 slot but is longer and requires crossmember relocation, driveshaft mods to both ends etc. I went with the original 4 speed just for ease and dollars sake. Bought new heavy duty clutch and pressure plate. 18R bellhousing bolts up but i had to drill out a couple holes for exta locating pins on the 22R.

If your car is diesel don't do it cos if you're gonna have to cut and relocate engine mounts and stuff it may as well be for a better engine.. I wanted a 5M for mine but didn't want to mount radiator in the tray. All in all should be good for double the 18R with good extractors and non-restrictive filter etc.

Also the twin-cam 18R-G is a bolt option as well but are high revving little motors more for top-end power than torque. The 22RE has less power but more torque as it's considered more of a "truck" motor. Depends on what you're after really.

And the celica you would want is an RA65. These have poxy hot air injection stuff coming off exhaust manifold so turf that s#@t.

hey guys,
i have a RN46 with the 18rg and the std 4 spd. Yes its a high rev motor and it like fuel. lol
Goes ok , on road it takes a while to get up 2 100kph and take off is sluggish. off road i mostly wheel in low range and it does it fine. would not be my choice of motor to slot in if i had other options. twin carbs are nice when runnin g fine but a bitch to retune if you dont know about them.
im lucky i know a rally mech who tunes/balences them 4 me.
just my 2 cents worth
