Smurf Clutch Price?

A mate of myne blew the clutch in his 91 Hilux Surf Yesterday and have been pricing new ones and was quoted $1400!!! This could just be a suzuki persons thinking but that seemd a little expensive. The guy reckons ya need to buy a whole new fly wheel with surfs? WOuldn't you just machine it flat like every other car?

I got a clutch put in the surf I had a few years ago and got told the same runaround by a few people. In the end went to a mates mechanic, he pulled it apart and it ended up being the same clutch as the bundera that also had the 2L-T motors.

Was only cause they didn't want to work on an import. Also had a noise when starting and was told the flywheel had teeth missing, it was an import, not like anything here, need to custom make a new flywheel, yada yada yada. Pulled the starter off to look and found the cog on the starter had broken. About 5-10 bucks for a cog, I think, all good.

The flywheel in the 2LTE is a dual mass and a pain in the ass.
I replaced my flywheel with a 3L (2.8ltr diesel) Hilux which is a solid and a new clutch kit to suit the Hilux flywheel but you need the flywheel bolts as well as there a little bit longer.
It all bolts up and it cost me about $400- all up about 12months ago and fitted it myself.

Both 2.4 and 3.0 Litre Surf's run a dual mass POS flywheel(The 3.0 has a bigger setup).
If you've done the clutch in and the gearbox is out then definately change to a solid setup from a 2.8Litre 3L domestic Hilux motor. Not that expensive for the smaller engine because there's plenty of 2.8L 3L motors floating around 3.0 setups are quite a bit more.
I made the mistake when my 3.0 clutch blew in my Surf. Changed the clutch to suit the DM flywheel then less than 6 months later the flywheel went and had to change the entire clutch/flywheel setup to a solid type.
Toyota scrapped the DM flywheels years ago. The solid setup is so much nicer when taking off.

so i should look around at the wreckers for a 2.8ltr fly wheel? is that what you were getting at? isn't changing ring gears exceptionally hard? i heard ya have to heat the ring gear to an extreme level to get it to expand then put it on then cool it rapily? this true?

From what I've heard, the ring gear is compatible. If it's a second hand flyhweel then the ring gear will be on it already. Just make sure you get the longer bolts as mentioned earlier then buy yourself a new aftermarket clutch kit. These are quite cheap. Good luck.

Daikin do off the shelf solid flywheel conversion kits. Catch is you still need to swap the ring gear off the old flywheel.

You don't need to touch the ring gear at all on the 2.8 as they are the same
