4 speed box vrs 5 speed box

Post by Mechman »

Hi guys,
did a quick search but nothing turned up, so im asking the question.
I have a 4 speed g box in the 40. I have been told that they are stronger than the 5 speed, but the econ on the v8 is shocking. Im thinking of getting a 5 speed. Im not into any serious comps or anything like that, and i am wondering just how much weaker the 5 speed are if at all????

oh, and if any one is interested i just put some rear seats in for the kids, with added roll cage and a snazzy shade cloth top. ill put some pics up.
ohhhhh shite... it really didnt look that deep!

4 speed

im getting about 5.5klm to the ltr. when not towing a trailer.
The box im looking at is from a later model 40, i think they came with 5 speeds.
I would like to do bigger trips now that the sprogs fit in the back and seem to like it.

I will post some pics as soon as i get some.

5 spds are strong enough.

late model 40s ones are just a 4 spd with a 5th gear attached to the back.

i run one of these behind my 383. its fine.

some people just abuse 5th gear too much. its only ment for cruising not accellerating.

i have a fj45 with a 308 . 4 speed 60 series box and transfer.
i run 3.7 to 1 diff gears insteed of 4.11 to 1 .
i get around 6 to 7.5 km/L .
with 33'' tyres it sits on around 2350rpm at 100km/h

i have some s/hand 3.7 gears if u need some .

4 speed boxes are as strong as the 5 speed boxes ./
it's the t/case u have to watch if u have a pre 8/1980 tranfer.
if u run a split type t/case they are alot stronger than the early one's .
