Hi All,
I have looked in the trading post lately and i have seen a number of range rovers at 2 grand or below. I am thinking of buying a second 4WD for myself and my girlfriend (my current car is a NA Pajero TD that I built myself, which does pretty well). We both love Rangies, I know that they are pretty thirsty, but according to this forum, parts are relatively easy to come by, and not that expensive, and these 4WD's are tty easy to work on. I've seen some that aren't running at the moment, priced around $1300 that come with heaps of spares and even 2x 3.5 V8's. Is there anything I need to be aware of before committing myself to rebuilding an old Rangie? Any advice would be greatly apprieciated!

Above all, just remember they use a $HIT load of fuel.
I think I got 150km out of a tank when I went to Fraser Island last time in my old Rangie.
That's over 50L/100km!!
I always averaged 20L/100km normal driving, the best being 16/100 on a highway run. However, I had a fairly overdrive which was magic.
On gas it was more like 22L/100 normal.
Hence I only own rovers on LPG! My Disco's no better and it's EFI! DAMN IT!!
Just look out for:
1. Rust in the steel parts
2. Significant oil leaking problems & no oil leaks (ie no oil in it!!)
2. Significant transmission backlash and noise
4. Bodgy electrics - as if rover ones weren't bad enough!
5. Radiators
Other than that they're bloody cheap, reliable and comfortable. It never ceased to amaze me that my 78 rangie, which is a 1960s design whipped the arse of the japs.
I had 4wheel disc brakes, constant 4wd, AC, PS, 4wheel coils, a pretty spirited engine & not too bad economy for the power (ref - petrol 4Runners!!!!)
I personally would by a 85/86 when they went to the newer shape and nice inside, i've sean reasonable ones for under $5k.
Remember you can get a pre-94 V8i disco for $6-7 if you look around!

Rangie bad points- Piss weak axles and diffs, and that POD (prince of darkness) Lucas electrical system.
I have had 4 Rangies from allo eras of upgrades and currently own an 83. Rough as guts, but with F&R maxi drives the breakaghe problem ghad been adressed somewhat.
Get one and you won't think about buying anyhting else

Was it a bitch to install.
I am looking at maxis for my disco, but a kit for F&R with the CV upgrade is $5k. Plus I won't be able to swap it if I buy a later model disco, the value of the car won't go up and they reckon it'll take 20hours to install both!

Rick's had my Rangie overnight and it was about $570 all up inc. new seals and other items. I wouldnm't bother fitting them myself, too much hassle for me

Try FWD here in Brisbane about the 110 CV upgrade rerquired for your Disco, well priced and will save you a packet. But well worth the money like I said.
