Vitara stalling once in gear.. any ideas?

Post by Jwreck »

Hey Folks..

My 92' (auto) Vit is having some serious troubles getting from idle to go.

Gave her a good flogging on Fraser Island over Christmas, but she came home to Melbourne in good shape.

Now when I start her up, she idles fine, but once I go to reverse or drive..she just dies.

Been told it may be sand in the carby, but i had a look and very little crap got through the hema filter. I may have to overhaul the carby.. but wonder if it could be anything else?

Any ideas?

Thanks, J.

Could be the primary jet blocked.

Can you floor it to revs and drop clutch or ease it off and its ok then?

If not could be the clutch???

cheers

I've had similar problems with mine over time.

1st time, mud and crap in fuel tank. Cleaned it, flushed lines, replaced filters

2nd time, bad flat spot, stalled occasionally, blocked up carby, reco'd, cleaned fuel tank, replaced filter, flushed lines

3rd time, bad flat spot, rough idle, reco carby, found out that the actual body of the carby had warped, got another one on that was reco'd before installation

now, inlet manifold gasket leaking to the point that you can block off the supply of air to the carby and the engine still runs.

Thanks Jim..

Looks like the carby is in for a reco on the quick! By the way.. how did you get crap into the fuel tank in the first place?

Hope you're having fun destroying your new toy. Maybe see ya on the tracks sometime.

Later, J.

What's the idle speed at when it's in park with nothing else on ???

i take it that yours is a 1600 8v Vit, those carby's are made of plastic and a pain in the ass...

what you need to look for is vacuume leaks, check all the lines are all connected especially the one from the manafold to the bottom of the airbox (always falls off), next would be possibily the idle up control pot
it has a vacume line to it from a solnide that pulls up the idle speed when ever the auto drops into gear or the a\c turns on, so either thats not working or the idle adjustment is out of wack, as your carb has 3 idle speed adjustments (Idle, choke fast idle, idle up), next check your fuelfilter is clean also with the top off the airbox rev the engine (in Park !!)
and spray a bit of carby cleaner down the throat of the carb whilst a mate revs the car.

see how you go with that before you fork over big money
