Ok, it is tyre time. I'm looking at either the Sumitomo Serengeti SL840 or the Simex Centipede MT. Tyre patterns look simular and both are 31x10.50R15. Has anyone had any experiance with either? Looking for tyre depth, wear, the normal guff. There is only $20 difference between the two. I know 4wd monthly ran their test but I'm after real world experiance and not once around the track on a brand new tyre.

No complaints with the Simex MT's. Be aware that they measure pretty close to to the mark at 775 mm (30.5"). Livable both in town and on the tracks. Seem to be wearing reasonably well so far (15000km) and down a couple of mm only, about 9 mm left.

I just had another read of the artical. When you take out the "sex appeal" of the tyres, the Serengeti came in tops on the off road section with %86.6 of the total possible score. The Simex only scored %46.6. From the above post the Simex do not seem this bad. This is why I am after real life opinions.

I had a look at the Serengeti's thought the compound may be a bit too soft to be used as a daily driver (wear), also may chip on rocks (they are after all MT's). That was the main reason I chose the Simex's at the time, that and their general reputation.

They were there for three days...drank for the first day and a half and Ottis kept breaking down when they did try to drive it. There was no substantial tyre testing.
They have done this before...who wants the most advertising? Who will pay more? ...that's how the winner is decided.
Didn't anyone else notice that the next issue had five pages of BFG adverts. What about the monoform mud terrain, they quoted that it's tread was identical to the BFG...Ok there will be some variation due to carcass and compound but it can not have performed so terribly compared to the BFG with the identical tread.

That's funny, in my copy they stated the tread "looks the same" but is 15% different (how they determine "15% different" I don't know ) presumably to avoid patent issues.
I thought they explained the differences quite well - the tread is different and the sidewalls are so much stiffer they don't like to bag.
But yes, it's hard to take the test seriously when they award points for "sex appeal." I thought the A/T test was much better done - they used Pajeros.
