cracking noise from front hubs (GQ)

Post by Cossie »

Shortly after picking up my 89 td42 maverick I noticed a cracking noise coming from the front when pulling off, it also did it when braking reasonably hard just before coming to a stop and when going over large bumps.
I unlocked the front hubs as I'd been driving with them locked (in 2wd obviously) and the noise stopped completely. Now its started doing it again but only faintly, before you could feel it through the floor of the car!!

Ive yet to pull apart the front hubs and look but does it sound like a bearing problem or something else?
anyone had this problem before?

thankingyoumuchly

i had something similar, i have a noise coming from one of my hubs and it was a sorta grinding sound, like a broke a cv. it turned out to be the gear inside the hug which is only a cheap part, take the hub off, clean it thoroughly and have a look for any damage.

hope this helps

you may find the noise you are hearing may be the body mounts if it is happening when taking off and braking,

may i ask, how did you determine it was a Hub noise?

I initially thought it sounded like body mounts creaking/cracking but after unlocking the front hubs it completely stopped. now its started doing it faintly with them unlocked (after several thousand k's).

I locked them the other week when I went 'wheeling and it was quiet then, I left them locked for abouit 100k's on the road and it only did it occasionally and faintly then.

so just guessing at front hubs/axle area really.

are your wheel bearings tight?may be a cause,

id say your wheel bearings may not be the culprit, otherwse it would do it all the time,

now, with the hubs unlocked, there should be no reason at all for noise, so id say it may be coming from ontother place, unless your hubs arnt unlocking correctly,

dont know where else it could be from. It has to be realted the unlocking of the hubs as it went from an awful knocking/cracking noise you could feel through the floor to dead silence when I unlocked them. It also definitely came from both sides of the car. :?
