Depends what you want to acheive. I've got a 6in lift and wanted to keep my COG as low as possible to minimise roll on side slopes, so I've built the centre of my tray so it just clears the crap underneath. I've done this cause I'm entering in the outback challenge this year and you have to carry all your gear on some of the special stages. I'm also continuing my main roll bar down onto the rear corners of my sliders (when they're on) so it gives them more strength. I have 2 main uprights on the roll bar that attatch directly to the chassis for strength and you'll find that most comps that don't require a full rollcage will specify that the roll bar has to mount directly to the chassis anyway. To keep the weight down I've used ally and rubber to fill the gaps. I've also angled the rear bar to give easier access to the tray but will hold stuff in the tray as well. These pics gives you an idea of my tray, even though it's not complete yet.

This is just what I did. There are many great designs out there, you just need to pic through them and make your own. :D

Yeah check out the threads here on welding, but also gets some scrap metal and just practice. Practice makes perfect as they say.

The tray is finished(apart from sandblasting and colour-coding after rego), there is a polished stainless steel rear panel that goes from the bottom of the chassis to under the tray and it will take the reverse lights, number plate light and number plate. I'm still waiting for the sheetmetalast to call me though :bad-words: . The revers lights are similar to the tail-lights but not ADR compliant so I may be throwing some small driving lights under there for rego, not sure yet though until I get passed or knocked back :?

Thanks for the good feedback guys

hey sorry to revive the thread but just thought id ask what u guys think about the prices i got quoted for my metal for my tray:

by the way customhilux just saw ur pics, thats a nice looking tray mate, i plan to have mine looking just like that, roll bars and all. love it :)

anyway here are the prices i got.

Frame - 75mm x 50mm Box Steel (~6m) = $108.85
Supports - 25mm x 50mm Box Steel (~5m) = $62.30
Chassie Rails - 100mm x 50mm Box Steel (~2.6m) = $54.50

Checker plate tray - 2.1mm (2.4m x 1.2m) = $112.00

Total comes to = $337.65 for all materials including checkerplate, this is all from one place, Premier Steel in hobart. Do you guys think this is an ok price, and is this enough / too much materials for a dual cab tray. thanks.

My frame has atleast 8.8mtrs in it (includes two crossmembers underneat ofcourse).

The rails sound about right, I have about 2,5mtrs for that with 7" cut off the chassis. However CustomHilux's tray is the same length exactly on an un-chopped chassis so I guess it should be the same either way :?

I don't understand why you need 5mtrs for supports though??

The steel looks fairly reasonably priced though for retail, I know the retail for that sheet of checkplate was another $20 from where I used to work. I used the same checker but need two sheets so I could cover both the base and the headboard without joins, helps when ya get both sheets for $50 though eh :D

I hope that helped with materials and prices mate ;)

how funny's that HnM,

u cut shit loads off ya chassie, i don't but ya still made ya tray to the length of the chassie anyway lol,

the reason he might be getting so much is cause like mine,

i ran nearly a full length to do cross bracing.
