220Amps? Thats huge, but I expect it was probably 120A. What breed of alternator is it?
Price replacing your alternator with a larger unit. I know a bloke who bought two new (rebuilt?) alternators (exchange?) for $180 each. considering repairing an alternator usually comes in at around $130, I would expect a rewind up to a higher amperage would be very expensive.
Contact someone like Ashdown's, Ingrams or AED for an idea. They will be able to tell you what will bolt straight in and how much it will cost.
Any upgrade of alternator will require an upgrade of wiring and fusible links.
