Hey all
Anyone know know of any range rover classics with a late model Gen3 V8 in it. I have a 1990 rangy with a tired 3.9 ZF in it. Looking at a 5.0 holden V8 but a Gen3 the same as my SS would be beautiful! I can get hold of one for a good price and thinking why not. Surely I would find someone one the gold coast who knows how to fit an engine like this.

The 5.0 looks like a great answer. Had an FJ40 with an injected VP 5.0 in it. Went very well indeed! was thinking since im going to all the trouble of fitting a non stock engine I might as well fit a Gen3 Chev from a VX or VY commy. nothing beats the torque and revs out of a standard Gen3. Mine in the SS is 245kw standard. Wouldn't have to get it tricked up at all. From what I have heard the ZF would handle this power fine. I gave the Rod Shop in melbourne a call today and they said it would be about 1k to make a plate to fit to the ZF. Its all gonna add up I can see. But seriously worth looking into it.
I was thinking of getting a short 4.6 and using my heads.. would be a cheap way to go. only about 5.5k total. I have an eaton M90 supercharger to fit a 4.6 sitting in the shed but honestly with all fitted it still wouldn't compare to a Gen3.
If anyone knows of any engineers around gold coast/brissy who is able to do a Gen3 conversion. Would be much appriciated.

I am running the 215 kw from HSV GTS 355 CI stroked 308.
reprogramed to around 250 KW.
has 485 NM torque at 3800 and suposedly 400+ @ 1200 rpm.
ZF handling ok but when it dies (or when I have the spare cash) will fit the clutch pack valve body from jag v12 Michael.

I have done some research on this.
Gen 3 has the same bell housing pattern as a chev 350.(Minus one bolt behind the upper RH) I understand Castlemaine Hot rods or whatever do an adaptor for Chev to ZF.
Engine mounts are in a different place to Chev350 , but US Advance Adaptors do a plate to put in the same place as Chev 350, so Chev 350 engine mount adaptor will fit. Marks have an alliance with Advance Adaptors.
There are rear sumps available in US.
similarly there are about 3 or 4 variations of exhaust manifiolds available ( Corvette, Camaro )and also "hugger" headers in the US.

Been pondering a few thoughts today and rang Holden and they have discontinued the HSV stroker basically i can see the Gen3 being a bit of a nightmare with mechanics here on the coast. Rang quite a few places and none were interested at all..or just way too hard for em too do. Not sure what to do..may just end up getting a 4.6 short motor and fitting that.

I had a 4.6 in my disco its was good but no where near the gen 3
Ive got a gen 3 in my defender now and other than gearbox problems ( hopefully solved) Im VERY happy
The power feels like twice the 4.6
You can also get heaps of power out of a gen 3 for low bucks
When I had my disco I played with heads, blueprinting, cam ,computers etc and still had no where near the pwer of the standard gen 3
The cost of the gen 3 conversion was about the same for me than a 4.6 with haltec engine management cam etc in my disco
I guess it comes to what you want to use the car for and whether the rest of it will be reliable with a gen 3 in it
PS: i bought my gen 3 from GQ the wiring was already done so made it a whole lot easier

Does anybody have the links to any threads or sites that cover this kind of mod to the zf tranny. I was always under the impression they were a light duty transmission and did not like huge power. Must say though, they are the smoothest shifting auto in any car I've driven yet.
v8 rangie I would persist with the gen 3 conversion. One of my long term goals is to fit this engine to the disco (or even the ls2/gen4 if its cheap enough at the time ). They are a much better standard engine (power and torque wise) than the rovers and full aluminium as well so the weight increase won't be huge. As a bonus if you need parts you just pull them off your ss .

may be light duty but easy top upgrade.
I am pumping 300 plus HP through my stock ZF so far so good.
THere has been some more talk on the upgrade on pirate 4x4.

Thanks heaps for putting me onto him mate. I rang the guy and was on the phone to him for like 30mins talking about all the ideas and factors involved.. He was quite keen on fitting the Gen3 with a T700 gearbox.. No way I would use one of those as they are dodgy gearbox.. but he said the ZF may work well anyways.. see what happens
He was conserned about gear ratios but at the moment my 3.9 with the bigger tyres does 2300-2400 at 100k's I think. say that would be perfect for a 350 chev Gen3.. I would even go higher to get a flat 2000rpm at 100k's. The torque of the Gen3 is great.. the other week I towed a mates car on a tandem trailer with the VYSS 130kph 1900rpm's (6speed manual) and still pulled fine.. be an awsome engine for the rangy.

I would have to agree with most of the others. Why bother spending dollar after dollar on an old clanger when for a similar price you could have a late model motor with oodles more performance.
Marks 4x4 do a conversion for the holden 5 litre into the disco which sounds pretty straight forward and a late model stroked donk from a bommadore would make it go nicely but i'd prefer the gen3 for all the work involved.
Good luck and don't give in, someone out there will have the knowledge and knowhow to make this happen.

who is John Davis?
John Davis and his brother Bruce had a well known business called John Davis Motorworks at Amaroo Park.
When they split up Bruce kept the rover servicing and modification work (now called Bruce Davis Performance Landys). John has the extreme vehicle mods (mostly for the United Arab Emerits), bushrangers and active suspension business.

John, the rangie that i saw at jdm in 2001 with a gen 3 was a 95 hse p38 not a classic. At the time i saw it he had it on the road but was pulling the motor out to fit twin turbos (or so one of his mechanics told me). As if a gen 3 wasn't enough! anyone who knows john davis knows that he can never get enough power under his right foot. The motor was out of a camaro and big $$$$ at the time. I think he used the hse's zf, apparently these are stronger.
