Piston question

Post by 4Speed »

Can anyone tell me if the pistons in a TB42d are the same or different to pistons in a TD42, and if there is anything else different? (apart from the turbo)

If its a TD42Turbo you mean, i THINK the pistons are the same part# but you would need to confirm with a Nissan dealer if your buying genuine. Genuine pistons are $60 each

The TD42/TD42T pistons are the same (nissan have 2 different part numbers for the same piston).

Are you asking the difference between TB42 and TD42? If so would be different i reckon because the petrol pistons would be lighter and not as strong as they only have to deal with roughly a compression ratio of , i dont know 8.1 at a guess compared to diesels 21.1. if thats what your asking....

4Speed,
To date, I've been able to find out the following regarding the TD42/TD42-T engine variants. Note, this applies to the GQ Patrol/Safari only.

GQ's produced from 1988 to August 1993 were all non-turboed and use relatively heavy rods/pistons etc. When the turbo version was introduced in August 1993, they continued to use the more robust rods/pistons, but a "turbo" cam was added. The non-turbo models (August 1993 onwards) use lighter rods/pistons and are prone to cracking heads and pistons if an after-market turbo is added and moderate boost used. Keeping things below 10-12psi seems to be ok though? Since the early GQ (1988 - August 1993) and later turbo models use the more robust rods/pistons, they are capable of handling more boost pressure.

Somewhere along the way (presumably post August 1993?), EGR valves were added also. As far as we can tell, injectors have remained unchanged. On factory turbo models, an aneroid was added. Obviously the exhaust manifold is different also to accommodate the turbo. I have no idea the other engine aspects though.

We did find that Nissan TD27 rods are the same as TD42 rods, about 1/2 the price of TD42 ones and we've used them in a rebuild. I assume there would be other similarities also.

Cheers
