Toyota V8
Well, after 5 months (!) my GQ SWB Patrol has a Toyota 1UZ-FE V8 motor, but 3 hours later the cxxt broke down.
The, new, timing belt busted. So lunched motor...
But this is a superior non-interference motor. Some bracket had broken and sheared the belt. All valves OK, all compession OK. Am I fuc%in happy or what!
Pick it up tomorrow.....post picks soon.....my faith in good engineering is restored - for now.

The boys up here at Extreme Motor Sport have just finished putting a Toyota V8 into a 4runner. Sounds awsome.
Fits really well too.

Re: v8
No they are not. The soarer is a 4L all alloy engine designated the 1UZ-FE there are available in a few versions up to about 200kW for late models with VVT. The LX470 and Landcruiser have a 4.7L cast iron block version of the same engine designated 2UZ-FE. This engine produces a lot less power but more flexible torque. It is also set up to run on normal unleaded in Oz. AFAIK, the 1UZ is usually tuned for 95 RON (or higher) from the factory.

But you can run them on normal unleaded and the knock sensors just bring the timing back to suit. There is no need to run a 1UZ-FE on premium.

It was one of the main reasons that made me sell the Wold 3D engine management I had and run the std. ecu on the V8. I was told on the Lextreme forum that a 1UZ will almost run on anything(I htink kero was mentioned in there somehwere, lol) it doesn't care, which is always good in a 4x4...

I look forward to seeing a VH45 in a GQ.
If I had been assured that they were more popular when I was looking at a 1UZ-FE I would have considered it. At the time I could not find anyone with any knowledge of them (not that that is a reason to not attempt it)
I imagine the conversion process would be very similar.

But isn't the standard ECU one of the biggest restraints on this engine, along with the exhaust headers?

yes it is, but a 1UZ running standard ECU and exhaust is a HUGE improvement over the 4 runner V6

I didn't think they was much to be gained by going to aftermarket ecu on the 1UZ, unless looking to go forced induction down the track?
I got 20% out of the old V6 by installing the Wolf, anyone know what kind of gains are expected on the 1UZ by going aftermarket ECU?

I have heard Unichip proponents claim 40kw gains on a 1UZ-FE which is not bad for a piggyback ECU, which can be easily removed if it becomes unreliable. If I break an aftermarket ECU in the middle of nowhere where do I get it fixed?
Also, I got a spare Toyota ECU with my engine, handy to take with me...

How do you just break an ECU in the middle of nowhere, if you can break an aftermarket one, would a standard one break too...
If your talking about tweaking it in the middle of the bush, you wouldn't do that anyway unless you are well experienced...
Does anyone know figures of a well tuned aftermarket over the standard ECU...?

Having driven mine around a bit I am very happy with the power. Its about 50% more than the TB42 and it just loves to rev. Very noisy though. Really barks on full throttle which I am hoping to tone down a bit. Unfortunately there is not a lot of room in a shorty for the right muffler setup.
I will look into a unichip eventually but at the moment I am heppy with the power.
While the programming in an aftermarket ECU will get you more power its easy to forget the 100's or 1000's of hours the factory put into the standard ECU, mapping it for many more situations than the aftermarket ECU. If you are going racing then fine, a $5000 MOTEC will make a huge difference but how many kilometers will a V8 Supercar engine last?
Just consider the effort the factory put in, on their own engine.
