new gq needs new donk

Post by mauricem »

just bought a 96 gq with a dead td42 (wrong! its a 2.8) factory turbo. Apparently idler bearing? came loose after a timing belt change and number 1 piston smacked into head (ouch!)

Looking at replacing with a na engine (no air) from a 94/95 series, done approx 200k, and bolting on air and turbo from old engine. I havent actually seen either the truck or the donor engine yet (long story) but the guy with the engine reckons this wont be a problem, others have suggested there may be a difference with exhausts and manifolds, pump and turbo mounting.

I recall something I read here that post 93 na td42s were not as strong internally as the factory turbo engine. Should I look for an earlier donor? Definitely dont want to go v8.

Just seeking a bit of feedback on this plan, Im not much of a mechaninc and wouldnt attempt a rebuild on my own and from what I gather outsourcing the job is going to cost heaps more than a good second hand engine. I'll be getting a shop to do the changeover.

thanks for any help

I thought td42 didnt have timming belts, only a set of gears upfront

You sure its not a 2.8 TD as they were factory here not 4.2?

bummer, its the 2.8  and I had a good 4.2 with motson turbo, clutch radiator etc lined up.
What else would I need to fit the 4.2 apart from a new gearbox$$.(power steering, air etc are not included with the donor ) Any ideas how much they go for?

I can backout so its no real problem but I really had my heart set on this rig

Keep looking , they are cheap now. I picked up my TD42 GQ for 12G. then fit a turbo. They are plenty strong enough. On the other hand they dont go too bad without a turbo, you just have to get out of the habit of holding it flat.

Just enjoy your surroundings

P.S. Having just said that, there is a limit to lack of power, I couldnt bear to drive a 2.8 Gutlux regularly. Not saying they are a bad truck, just really slow on the highway.
Don't ask me, ask them. I'm just runnin for my life myself.
Well they are all following you...
No they ain't, I'm just in front...............

Got some options:
92 gearbox and transfer case $950 gympie
94 gearbox tcase etc $1400 exchange brisbane
are the 94 boxes that much better due to the improved synchro?

What else would I need to fit the 4.2 into the 2.8 body? Tailshafts maybe?Diff would be ok wouldnt they?

how about the 2.8 gearbox clutch etc any ideas what they'd be worth to sell on?

thanks from the noob :?

There is a guy on here that has done this conversion but I can't remember his name, someone else might be able to pipe up with some contact details.
