Diesel problems...missing?

G'day peoples, my 4.2 (non-turbo) diesel seems to have a bit of a miss when I start it first off after its been sitting for a day or two, I think it may be a glow plug not heating, cos once it has run for a minute or two it seems to come good. Anyone had this issue? Any advice? Am I on the right track, can you get the plugs glow tested?

vehicle has done almost 500,000 and hasn't had new glow plugs as far as I know.

Does it really bother you?

Will probably be a small airleak into fuel line that bleeds out after some fuel has cycled thru.

YOu can test glow plugs if you have a manual ( to kow what the spec is) and an Ohm meter. Or you can just change them...

yeah it bothers me :oops: , I like it to run like it has for the past 500,000k's, like clock work! I don't like starting it up and running like a bag of shite. having driven trucks all over the country I have found its the things like this that you ignore that one day leave you stuck somewhere up shite creek.

just thought that is prolly one cylinder not being preheated, therefore running poorly on start up as once it has run for a while its fine. If it was sucking air I think it would be far worse than it is, doesn't feel harsh enuff for that.

yeh check your glow plugs ... if that doesn't work ...
your injectors might be sticky and need an overhaul

mine did the same thing and got to the stage where I couldn't drive it anymore because it was missing in cylinder 3 and 4 and blowing bue grey smoke and it was the desiel pump I suggest you check the glow plugs ,then injectors and then if the problem is still there it will be the injector pump. this is how I solved my problem.

Also on the air thing Ive seen them where the prime pump seal lets air in overnight and makes engine miss until it bleeds out.

For Glow plugs just remove common connectors and check for continuity with a test lamp. (+ve behind lamp) Will find an open one.

Also run a strong cleaner thru in case an injector is a bit sticky. Cheaper than a pump or injector removal. If it helps.

How many kays have poeple got out of their injector pumps? Just think it has never been done in 500,000k's, its had injectors, but pump hasn't been touched.

when mine shat itself it had 152000ks on the tacho which surpirsed me because I thought it would last a lot longer than that.
