Could not find any specifc threads on the topic so here i go..
Firstly, rear LSD is not that healthy so started looking into diff locks for the Rodeo. Lokka dont make one for the rear.. am awaiting feedback on the Lock-Right and I beleive that ARB do have an air locker to suit..

But I have been reading some bad stories re front lockers and the demise of CV joints. Anyone out there got lockers on their Rodeo and if so.. what do they have/ recommend?

Diff locks on Rodeo

Your only options are ARB front/rear and Lokka Front at the moment.
Dont be too worried about putting the locker on the front. I believe as do many others that the front is the best option for IFS vehicles as the extra traction really goes a long way to rectifying a lot of problems associated with having poor front suspension travel. I've had a Lokka on my Jack for over 4 years and in that time have only done one cv and that was on a fairly serious hill climb. Been extremely happy with it over that time but would prefer an ARB locker for the extra selectability...

Cool, thanks for confiming what I had thought. I was recently searching the overlander news groups and all I seemed to get was doom and gllom re lockers on the front of IFS.
Many stating, with the front locked, should a wheel go air bourne and then come down the tourqe will rip the crap out of the CV. I suppose the moral here is don go like a bul at a gate to get in that situation.
Looks like I save up my pennies for the ARB at the rear rather than sinking money into my LSD being replaced.

Offcourse there is always a chance of this occurring but most find that after they install a locker they can lay off the throttle a bit and greatly reduce the risk. Ofcourse it also works the other way where you find yourself trying to do things that you wouldnt have tried before and get yourself into more trouble!

G'day rainsey, I've got a 2001 Rodeo with an ARB Air Locker in the back. It's great compared to the LSD but I have found that with no weight in the rear on some really steep rutted hills I spin both rears and one front. With a couple of hundred kilo's in the back I can drive almost anywhere and get myself into a lot of trouble!
I chose the to put the Locker in the rear for longevity, no CV's to break and I can also steer quite well with the locker engaged. My Rodeo also has no freewheeling hubs so I chose not to go with the Lokka. If I get keen enough I'd install a front Air Locker as well.
I'm always lifting wheels trying to keep up with the big boys so the Locker was essential. (My 4wding buddy has an 80 series cruiser with twin lockers!)

I would expect this to happen without a front locker. One front wheel gets airborne, spins up with some revs on board then lands on the ground with X amount of torque going through it snapping either a CV or axle. With a locker both fronts wheels would have to be off the ground for them to spin up but even then the torque would be distributed between both front axles/Cv's.
BTW, I am of the philosophy that you want to negotiate a steep rutted hills with as little speed as possible (idle 1st gear low range). I use 1st gear because my Rodeo is a V6 with not a lot of torque at idle, in a diesel maybe 2nd gear low range. You will notice that with a locker you will be able to idle up hills you couldn't before at the same time not cause any track damage from spinning wheels.

you could go along the same route that i am..... my rear diff is starting to drop it's guts.... so i am going to get it reco'd and wound up. The guy at Newcastle Gearbox & Diff said they can wind them up tighter than normal. I have a lokka in the front, and it keeps up with the locked pootrols and hiluxes.... surprises a lot of people. If it was me, i'd go for a front locker, and get the ass end done up. costs less, and you get a new diff btw... i was quoted $600 to redo the diff from wheel to wheel...... thats with me taking it in and picking it up.
