Inline air filters with snorkel

I have a 22R 94 hilux and want to make my own snorkel and intake system, and at the bayside 4x4 show on the weekend saw a comp truk with a finer filter pod on top of the snorkel, good idea i thought, in the dry!
Is there some way i can plumb a filter of any kind into the snorkel or piping so that i can do away with the whol airbox, and associasted intake crap inside the engine bay? i did this on an old car with an efi engine and it ran a lot better however no snorkel obviously.
Basically i want to run a pod filter drawing from as high as a snorkel, but without having to worry about rain etc screwing it up and i want to run a direct line from the engine end of the snorkel straight to the intake manifold. this will allow a lot more room in the engine bay and give a cooler, more direct intak method = better performance. (i hope)
Is there any advice or tips for such a set up? Any advice appreciated pic would be better !! Thanks in advance.
