GQ Free wheeling hubs heating up
GQ Free wheeling hubs heating up
FOr some reason the hubs run at a unusually high temp. I ve tried less grease and less tension on the bearings, but they are still to hot to touch long enough to enguage them in one go. Any ideas
My GQ is the same. Hot to touch after driving for a while, seems typical amongst GQ's as has been stated already.
The first time i put my old my old MK patrol into 4wd i drove it down a track for about five minutes when smoke started pouring out from the front left wheel/guard area. When i took a look i needed a glove to disengage the hub it was that hot. After dissasembly it turned out that the diff breather was blocked
and that pressurised the diff blowing out the axle seal and forcing oil all over the brake disc etc. A minor rebuild later and all was good but i check the breathers regularly now

Yes, especially with a 10 inch rim.
If you don't have access to an infra red temp tester (some sparkies use them) buy one of those dual temperature thermometers, with the sensor on a length of wire - you can place the sensor on the hub at operating temp to get some temp stats (when vehicle not rolling of course). When you are done with the thermometer, you can put it on your fridge to monitor the temps in and out.

when i was locking my hubs in last night, it seemed like the hubs werent as hot as what they normally are, its probably just a once off but i hope it stays like that.
things changed as mentioned earlier: pads, disks and grease. also, it might have something to do with my old disks being full of mud in the groves which created a heat build up, as i havent filled the new ones full of mud yet.
