engel fridge dramas updated

Post by bowser »

my new 40L fridge was used for 3 weeks straight on a camping trip and worked like a treat, went to turn it on and cool some beer yesterday and it won't work, light comes on etc but it just hums, checked fuse etc all fine, purchased early jan. very dispointed with what is supposed to be the best fridge on the market only lasting 3 weeks! have it sitting at the dodgiest refridgeration joint that is a engel dealer getting fixed will let you know how it turns out. also when i bought it i was supposed to get a free mini basket but salesman was just feeding me shit still waiting

Did you try conecting it straight to the Batt. Mine was like this when I buggered the ciggie lighter plug. It would get 12.7V but couldnt get enough amps. But when connected straight to battery. It worked.

May have just been a dud, since its so new may be able to get a change-over.

Who did you approach about it? It sounds like you got a bit of a raw deal from the seller re the basket. I thought they all came with them.
I would be making direct contact with Engel and telling them the situation. There is supposed to be a 3 year warranty with them.

bought it straight off the rep, i got the big basket that it comes with but upon buying it was promised a small second basket also that would be posted out to me, that was almost 3 months ago and i'm sick of ringing and asking about it, so far it has been promised to be posted out to me 4 times!

haha if it's the same engel rep i got my 40l off, he checked he had one, then i paid for it, then they accidentially didnt have one.. so i had to pick it up a week later.

I scored a mini basket off him tho :) Lucky it was in my vision when I badgered him for it I suppose.. they are not designed to fit across the big basket and I had to adjust mine.

my housemate has one from the early 80's that still cranks :)

They need good ventilation. B4 we go away on our trailable yacht, we get the fridge to freezing while able to use our house's 240v. One time we went away it was stinking hot, and we had the solar panel across the front hatch, & the fridge stopped working. Despite the fact that everyone who is service support says that engels do not have thermal overload cut out thingies, our fridge started working again after a couple of hours. The same thing happened on a sail over to Tangalooma, when Moreton Bay swell was about 1.5m from the SE. We were pointing into the swell most of the trip so had to have the front hatch closed to stop water coming into the v-berth. Anyway about half-way into the trip (about 1.5 hrs) noticed the fridge temp had climbed to nearly 8 degrees & the motor wasn't running. Started thinking how are we going to keep things cold till the morning as the resort sell ice (at $6.50 a bag!). But after we anchored at the wrecks turned the fridge back on & it started running again. Maybe u just got a dud one, surely you could get a replacement since it is only 3 weeks old?
If we can put one man on the moon, why can't we put them all there!!

Still under warranty so should be no prob.

As with most electrical things if they do fail it tends to be early on (HEat, dry joint the like). Unfortunate but it happens even with the most expensive gear.

As sombody that tests consumer products all day everyday, the best you can hope for as a manufacture in terms of returns is about 95-99%.

It was probably just a bug or bit of dust or somthing that just may have landed in the compressor the day it was manufactured, or even a funny bearing purchaced from a reputable bearing manufacture.

These guys would have done there groundwork before designing them, but unfortunatly there is always something that can go wrong

I would not consider this to be a reflection of the company but more a unlucky unit

BTW: in no way am i conected to the manufacture or even have ever tested there products.
