G'day Guys
Did the diff in my 99 TD hilux a while back.
Still have no cash to fix. But heard that toyota upgraded the front
diff and CV's to stronger units around 2002.
Anyone know if this is true? Because if I'm going to a wreakers asking
for a new front diff for the lux and there is a stronger one out there
I want it.
Thanks
Goodsy

Only way that I know of to make an IFS diff stronger is to bolt in an ARB air locker.
The airlocker centre is more rigid than the factory one and stops the crownwheel from flexing.
CVs are then your next weak point so go easy on the loud pedal when locked.
Or you could always SAS it with an 80series centre, Airlocker and HTE or Longfield CVs .

Yes they did........................
The new Prado was certainly upgraded not 100% sure on the Lux but would be surprised if it wasn't.
I believe it is pretty much the size of the IFS 100 Series diff and CV's now.
The diff went to a 8" HP (from 7.5") and the CV axles up to 33mm, 30 spline (from 28mm, 27 spline) or figures like that.
They are certainly stronger but still breaking but nowhere near as bad as the old 7.5" diff.
Honestly for the cost of this upgrade I would look at a 5 link from Cheezy.

IFS Diffs
The only thing you can do to a IFS diff to make it stronger is to put a airlocker in it. I have two IFS diff in my shed one is unlocked (standard 4:3 ratio) and the other is a ARB airlocker with a 4:55 ratio which is about 12months old. I never broke a cv when I had a IFS front end but I did break one axle (the short one RH side).I have two sets of cv's in the shed as well. If anyone is interested PM me?

How much are you asking and where are you located??
CHEEZY 5 link
Put a Locker in the front and you will be able to crawl up and over stuff with out having to bury the foot to the floor then you will have no more broken front diffs. You may have the odd inner axel let go but thats about it, I broke a few inners & cracked 1 CV and I was running JT2's with 4" lift , locked front & back. I ran this setup for 3 years before getting Cheezy to SAS my Surf and the front IFS is in a mates Surf still going strong .
The IFS with a locker fitted is a beauty and will last forever but it really depends on how you treat your car.
Mind you I've broken a heap of shit since the SAS went in .... But Cheezy said I can go up anything
