rev limit max and power limit for tb42

Post by Quadcamshorty »

Hi guys,

I have just finished doing all the suspension work in my shorty gq, inc 4 +2 inch lift, adj trailings and panhards, drop boxes and 35 mickey t's.

I am now installing an orig efi manifold, with gtr injectors, autronic ecu, high mount t3/t4, front mount intercooler, big fuel pump etc etc.

My question is regarding the max power output people have experienced with the standard internals? The motor has excellent oil pressure and holds good compression. 200,000k old.

What rev limit can i get before she runs out of puff?

Does anyone know a good camshaft for my setup? If i need it.

cheers.

Hey,

The mods you mentioned the engine can pull it to 7,000 rpm, might get 150-170 Kw @ wheels (my estimate) or even more if u maxed the fuel pump or u can get gtr pumps as well...

What diff ratios are you planning to running?

From exprience with RB30ET the setup, the car will go like a rocket!

Let us know how it goes...

Cheers

mcjeff,

7 grand, are you serious, thats awesome.
How is the cam up there? Must be well and truely out of puff i would of thought.

Fuel flow wont be a problem as i have a gtr pump to go in.

Ive got 4.1 ratios and was gonna see how they go. Happy to change if necessary, but thought with a bit of power they could be alright.

cheers

Hey,

Yep 7 grand on my RB30ET stock looking patrol! on your setup it could do same or more if u got good injectors and pump.

My patrol has 4.3 ratios and it hammers...

I don't know what cams are in it but i suspect either R31 or VL Turbo cams... is your engine comes with single or twin cams?

Cheers

Why are you guys talking about RD30ET when the post clearly states that he has a TB42? Very different engines from very different schools of design: one designed for trucks that other for cars.

Richard.

P.S. That sounds like a very nice truck!

rlaxton, i was thinking a mistake must have been made, 7 grand seems too high.

Thanks.

You can take the power limit to 180 kw before having to change internals champ. The earlier you hit your rev limiter the earlier you lose power.

I had my L28 revving to 7500 but it was heavily modified, and NA
You should not need to rev so high with a turbo
I cant see a 4.2L revving to 7000, no way man...its OHV for christs sake!

My carby 200,000km stock TB42 with a Crane ignition system has seen 6500rpm a few times, not much happens after 5500rpm though, it's a big heavy motor not exactly spritely unless you stuck forced induction on it. Got plenty of grunt down low compared to a RB30 though.
You need to disable the rev limiter and fit a 8000rpm tacho from the RB30 :D

Hey,

The turbo Quadcamshorty is getting is more of mid-high rpm bandwidth than low rpm bandwidth so thats why i'm guessing 7k rpm so it's just words after the work put it on dyno and find out what bandwidth the turbo/engine is making...

So some guys here make a points over two very different designs of engine, so i still think this combo can rev it to 7k just my opnion by the way.

By the way my RB30ET is ohv in case anyone asked my mate has ridden on it, he says the car is sleeper...

Sorry for long post

Cheers

Ontrack in Keilor have have a GQ Ute with a tb42 with 230kw at the wheels on 35's with 4.1diffs. But have heard they have recently had an engine crap itself. a bearing in the bottom end died and blocked the oil passages and cooked the turbo as well as the motor.

Tough old engine normally aspirated, I used to rev my old block out to 5500rpm even with a blown head gasket and running a water oil mix :D

Thanks for the replies! I am definately starting to get excited about what it should do.

Sounds like Ontrack are a good place to call.

Anyone know any other shops or people who have turbo setups?

What if any strengthening upgrades are there for the internals? As i have a second cracked head motor that i want to rebuild over time.

cheers.

Hey,

Glad to hear you getting excited with this conversion, trust me, once u have turbo'd it u'll never go back to n/a!

Good luck and post dyno sheet when you done this...

Maybe you can have a look at JPC in Thomastown (i think) they do turbo setups on gq 4.2 as well...

I don't know any of strentghing internal engine parts are available for TB42 so you could get most parts forged by some mechanic but i'm not sure.

Cheers

From what I have heard most of the Nissan engines are built strong enough to have turbo's put on them. With strong bottom ends std. The reason for the failure of Andrews (Shrek)is probably cos it does get a hard live..

Did it die at the Pajero Challenge because it was making some pretty nasty knocking noises :?

6500rpm is fine.

Thats what we have set it to on a mates patrol with modded head / cam and elec ignition.

Revs all day long.

Also speak to Sandy Bowman a Aus4WD.

very interested in this as well, any one know of where to get cams for these of the shelfto suit turbo's or would it be a custom re-grind job, any one got any photo's of a turbo tb42 they could post up, was thinking about a diesel chev but gone off the idea, no one down here wanted to look at it when i mentioned v8 diesel for work, they all got scared,(joys of being in tassie) so im going to stick with nissan gear and then i can do it my self, im a mechanic but i hate diesel's and wont work on them but a big cube turbo six....hell yeah

love some photos and specs of turbo's people have used

cheers

RB30 is OHC, best engine Holden never made

grazza - do a bit more homework, i got a feeling holden didnt have much input into the design of the RB series motors at all.

quadcamshorty, good to see your doing the turbo properly and going EFI!

where abouts are you located, I'd love to have a look at a TB42 turbo setup.[/quote]

I'm all for going back to telling me how much power can be made with the standard tb42 in good condition.
I am thinking 220kw atw with smallish tyres is about it, but happy to hear from people who think more.

btw, 2jz is the best straight 6 EVER made!

cheers
