i'm putting a holden efi v8 and a zf 4sdp into my rangie and wondering if there is any computer control required for the zf that my 84 (torque flite) rangie won't have and will need to get. i've heard some vague and disturbing stuff about how the zf knows when to go into 4th gear. has anybody upgraded before and know this?? i haven't bought the zf yet is there anything i need to know before i do?

Apparently on the newer ZF's ie TD5 they rely more on electronics. I have just installed a ZF in mine and have had no problems. Quite a simple job.

Only the HSE ZF autos are computer controlled the old ones are basically electronic free. You don’t have to connect any wires to get the car up and running, however I would advise hooking the reverse lights up :P The other wires coming out of the auto are meant to be hooked up to the starter motor so you can’t start the car in gear. The kick down cable is the key!!! If you don't set that right the auto will shit itself!! I found that if you use the lead marker on the kick down cable as an indicator leave about 1/4 of an inch from the cable holder and go from there.
As far as fitting extractors to a HSV motor in a Rangie you have to cut the chassis rails to make them fit.

these guys are correct.

Autos from series 2 RR on and the latest disco's require electonic connection to ECU.

THe ZF used in the earlier Disco and Clasic RR require no electronic other than ignition block out and reversing lights.

Bolt it all in all will be fine.

Things to check.
1: free space betwen the flex plate and torque converter max 2mm min 1.5mm.
2: when installing the auto make sure the dogs on the T/converter engage in the pump in the auto.
3: Do not drive with out hooking up the kickdown cable which also comtrols the pressure to the clutch plates, full travel on the cable = to full throtle. Can post pics of my set up if required.
