My brother has a 79 model flat tray with a 2H and 4spd. The problem is when driving the motor will just start reving for no apparent reason. Ive checked the return spring in the throttle and thats there and strong and the accelerator cable is free (not binding). Im putting it down to something wrong in the pump!
Any other ideas or can someone pinpoint the problem.

2H reving for no reason

There is a diaphram in the back end of the pump. Check to see if its split or perished.
The fuel control relay &/or edic motor might be playing up. Moisture plays havoc with the fuel control relay circuit board.

this is most likely to be the cause. a small tear in the diaphragm is all it takes.

How bad is it revving?? I've seen somone overfill their oil after an oil change to the point where it started running on it's own engine oil .... the result ... lots of revs, lots of noise, 1 x rooted clutch (trying to stall it) and eventually a big BANG, lots of smoke, a very expensive repair bill and the usual egg on face!!
I guess as it hasn't gone BANG yet then it may not be the oil level but just in case check it to see if, when driving, it picks up a little sump oil and tries to run on it.

heheh my bundera did that, it revved off the end of the tacho (6000rpm + I think) - it didn't blow up but it never did sound the same after that.

clutched it - it had a exedy Xtreme clutch so there was never any slippage.

Not over full on oil, No blow by, and it will stop when you pull the kill button. Three people have said the diaphram ill try that and let you all know.
