86 Landcrusier turbo diesel shorty

Post by RN »

Friend just took delivery of a 86 Landcrusier turbo diesel shorty a few days ago.

Paid 7.5K, body in vey good condition. Only complaint so far is that it has drums all round. What would you suggest would be the easiest way to do a disc conversion?

I had no idea turbo diesel shorties came with drums up front. Some 75 series do, but I thought a bundy always had discs.

I suppose you can get a disc brake swivel housings from a 40 or a 60 and swap them in.

"bundys" are all disk front, but not all shortys are bundys.

what is the history of this truck? almost all landcruisers were disk front after the late '70's!

what engine/gearbox/axle combination does it have?

Hi Brian,
What I mean to imply was that there were no turbo diesel shorties in 1986 other than the LJ70. They were called the Bundera, right? There was a turbo diesel MWB, the BJ74.

1986 shorty landcruiser

Post by RN »

Hi all, I have no idea about Toyotas..but no where on his vehicle does it say Bundera...definitley a Lancruiser and the thing that ennoys him the most is the lack of stopping power. Drums all round and power assisted. It is a 4 cycl diesel turbo with a removeable back roof and barn doors, Looks like a troopy in the front. 5 speed manual,.RN

is it a 2.4 litre with factory turbo or a 3.4 litre with an aftermarket turbo? - as Dave has suggested the shorties did not come with the 3.4 turbo from the factory. does it have coil suspension or leaf springs? are you absolutely certain of the drums all round?? if it was a local market 'cruiser from '86 then it should have a disk brake front.

Is it LJ70? They never came with 5speed box, so thats aftermarket. They did come with 2.4L Turbo diesel engine. Your front brakes should be disc and the rear drum (as factory). To convert fron to disc, you just need LJ70 front discs axle. Rear no point.

Agree with Brian here, all 86-89 turbo diesel shorties come with 5 speed manuals. Some n.a. LJ70's come with 4 speeds but they were not Aus. market vehicles.

RoadNazi, when you said it looks like a troopie but shorter, is it the current troopie or the older 45 series? Are the rear barn doors symmetrical or is one side wider than the other? My guess is your mate has a pre-1985 40 series with a turbo added or a turbo diesel donk fitted.

I am not in Aussie actually. Where I am all LJ70's were 4 speed from factory. 2LT's were available, also 4 speed. Ok different country, different spec.

ah well then it all makes sense. you are presumably in SE Asia somewhere? Malaysia, Indonesia? It would help if you stated your location in your sig or your profile!

so what you have is an LJ70. you can get everything you need to convert the front to disks from a hilux of similar vintage - get everything from the swivel knuckle all the way out to the locking hub. might be worth picking up the master cylinder too - might be different. should all bolt together.

cheers

Are you sure? AFAIK no 2L-T powered LJ70's were sold with 4 speed regardless of market spec.

Not sure what motor he has but he reckons it is not a biggy...whatever that means.

I will get back to him and get the most accurate of info.

All LJ70's sold in Malaysia were fitted with 4speed boxes and availabe with either 2L or 2L-T engines. Most who converted to 5speed used the kit or put 5speed boxes from LC2 LWB. I own one!! Just fitted 5speed box from an LC2.
