mig welder
I have just bought a mig mag 180 from a mate with 1/2 full bottle for $250.00, he has no more use for it. a good price i think. anyway can i weld ally with it and ifso what will i need?
First the right gas to use is Argon not the mix that is in the bottle now.
Although it will probably work OK.
Buy a spool of alloy wire and get the correct tips for the gun The tips are oversize in diameter to allow for the expansion of the wire from heat while welding.
The steel core is often changed to a plastic core for large runs as the steel core grabs and scoures the alloy wire as it is being fed thru.
PATIENCE PATIENCE and more pat.....................

Keep it simple
A bottle of pure welding grade Argon, some "U" shaped drive rollers and a teflon liner and slightly larger contact tips.
Then you need a whole lot of patience and then you'll decide why doesn't my welding look like all those bling welds the professionals do and you'll send all your work to me where I'll TIG weld it "seriously BLING" with my $10,000 Tig welder

Yep. A 108 unit will do for aluminimum quite OK. It will have to work hard to join steel over 4mm however.
The spool is ??? wire??? ally???? You will need to change the spool to do "ally" if it's GP steel .08mm.
You will need to look at the gas as well. If your not sure, head for your local welding shop and ask advise. Big downer here is that you WILL need to return the bottle and sign a new rental form (about $54.00 per annum) before you can get a refill.
Practice welds with ally before touching the proper job....

corgon is a mix of argon, oxygen and carbon dioxide, thats the colours at the top. argon comes in a bottle painted only blue........
from what i know, and im not a boilermaker. Argon is used for ally only...
there are also different mixes of corgon, and depending on what your welding is the one you need. best ppl to ask is the welding shop where your gonna go to get a new tip and shroud........cause there probably fooked. they probably see gas too, and they definately know how to weld, so they will know everything. they probably have a brochure from BOC that says what to use anyway
