I read on a website that IsuzuRover (pirate4x4.com) has converted a Land Rover Discovery to Isuzu Diesel. Trying to find him for advice.
I am in California, USA. I have a 1994 3.9 V8 petrol automatic Discovery that I want to convert to a Isuzu 3.9 turbo diesel (engine 4BD1-TD) because this engine is readily available in US. I want to retain all wheel drive system.
Isuzu engine is coming out of 1990 Isuzu box van in California.
When converting, was bell housing off a 110/130 Land Rover used (I understand that the Isuzu diesel was an option in the 80s for 110/130 Land Rover in AU) or a conversion plate?
Do I need a an engine out of a 5 speed or automatic Isuzu because of mounting it to torque convertor?
Does Isuzu oil pan (sump) clear front axle w/o modification?
Any other modifications or problems encountered?

I have not converted a discovery to a 4BD1. I have a 110 with a factory 4BD1.
The 4BD1's were factory fitted only with the LT95 (4 speed) and LT85 (110 5 speed). Bellhousings for these gearboxes are available second hand but rare.
Strange Rover (Sam) on here's business partner has a range rover with a 4BD1 and R380, but it was a custom conversion with a custom fabricated bellhousing.
If you want to mate the 4BD1 to a ZF auto, the person to contact is JustinC - he is doing the conversion at the moment (in a Range Rover) with an adaptor he made himself and is thinking of selling the adaptors if there is enough interest. See thread below.

I am now thinking about going with the Isuzu 2.8 Turbo Diesel 4JB1-TD with readily available conversions.
