Bash plate/sliders

Post by toughnut »

After some SENSIBLE comments about the bash plate/sliders I'm making. ie. Any changes you'd make. Things to think of etc.
Image All that's left to do is weld on some 3mm plate on the underside of the rails and belly. Your looking at it from the front. :D

I think it looks great. Thinking about this myself now :D

But, will four retaining bolts be enough? What about access to check
gearbox oil levels?

It's also retained at the rear of the side rails to the chassis just on top of the lower rear control arm mount. The bolts only have to stop it from falling off, not take much weight. I'm cutting access holes for the gearbox and transfer case drains and you can just get into the fill plugs as well. I've used 40mm box with 60mm tube for rails. I have to grind off the centre lug on the transmission crossmember so it doesn't take too much height off the chassis.

already have one made up but can't think of how to attach it without having someting sticking out of the underside of the plate. Can't weld ally to steel last time it checked and solder won't be strong enough.

Aren't 16 bolts enough? There are 2 on each of the 4 underside tabs and 4 on each of the rail ends.

I would add a few extra mounting locations (just to spread the load - those outer bars could flex a lot with the mounts so far inboard. And make the skid plates bolt on with countersunk allen screws or similar. You will always be wanting to take the plates on and off to clean out crud and work on the truck. Would be easier to just take the plate off than the whole thing - could even make them alloy then.

you never mentioned that. ;)

as IR says, you want the mounts as far out to the side as possible to stop ANY flexin'.... if you wanna protect the sills. 2ton fallin on em they will flex...

Thought about that. Thats one of the reasons I would prefer to weld the plates on. Also the mounts for the rails are higher to try and triangulate the load.

Not a bad idea but not as strong as welding and wont offer too much in the way of strength to the frame. It will have good acces to the drains etc and I'm cutting in drain holes for slosh. Good idea's though. :D

Those mounting tabs mount to the underside of the chassis rails. Don't really know how to move the mounting points further out. Thats why I've gusseted the cross rails.

how far out to the edge are your chassis rails? what trucks it goin on?

You could use some of them massive U Bolts they hold Ute trays and truck bodies on with, and mount to chassis rails.. thats as good as you will get outwards me thinks.

it looks to me where you have the bars going lengthways towards the outside (not the outer outer ones) there is where he chassis rails r?

It's hard to make out in this pic but the chassis gets wider towards the back of the sliders. you can just make out the rear chassis mounts just inboard of the gussets on the rear cross rail.

Make sure you can get access to clean out all the branches and bushes you will pick up during the nav stages, it would be a shame to see your rig go up in flames, if it catches fire.

Im fairly sure you can weld bis-alloy to steel with weld all arc rods? I know you can use them to weld stainless and stuff but i may be wrong anyone else know?
