Post by Kev80 »

Iv had a Chev engine in my boat for a few years now & was told it was a 350 when i bought it.

When i look up the cast no#s to check what size it is the same no# is used for the 302, 327 & 350. :?

Block no# - 3970010

Example -

First site has no block info. (that i could find)
Second site is for crankshafts, looked up blocks on this site & still the same. Its either a 327 or 350.
Third site is for heads.

How ?
By removing the heads & measuring the piston stroke.

I wonder how many assume they know what size their engine is.

Kev,

It is a 350 chev, 1968 - 1976 built for truck and high performance applications, it is more than likely a 4 bolt main.

Identifying the block:
Chevy small block casting ID numbers
Casting Number Inches of Displacement Years Used Used In
3556519, 3737739, 3849852 283 1958-'61 Trucks and passenger cars

1. Blocks with casting number 3703524, first six months production used mechanical cams, not hydraulic.
2. Blocks with casting number 3970010, sometimes machined for 2 bolt mains.

best you check the stroke, you can check it with a hard piece of wire to get a rough estimate

A ruler,
350 3.48 stroke
327 3.25 stroke ?
302 3.00 stroke
305 3.48 stroke
307 3.25 stroke
265 3.00 stroke
283 3.00 stroke
267 3.48 stroke
262 + 400 ?
I thought 265 283 + 327 were all small journal, 302 could be either but most small journal ones were 283's overbored with 308 pistons which gave them low compression due to gudeon pin heights

400 is 3.75 stroke

kev, i thought the same thing when i got my engine. it was a 3970010. think the heads it had on it told me it was a 350. and the build date. those websites were helpful.
