I got an old aftermarket tacho somewhere at home, would it work to hook it up and see if it has the same problem? It worked fine when I pulled it out of my old car.

I had a similar thing but my tacho dropped quickly and then went back to normal. It ended up being my points and after installing my pertronix ignitor ignition, all fixed.

PS. I first replaced my coil with no change.
