Which is better?

Post by BlackSheep »

Which vehicle would be best for stock offroad ability and best ultimate offroad ability? Landcruiser 78 ute or Patrol GU ute? Which would be cheaper to modify the suspension on?

I may be biased, but most likley the patrol .. as most of its suspension parts (coil all round version) would be common to the entire GQ\GU family.

Defianatly the patrol they are stronger in so many ways. And most suspension parts are the same as the earlier coil patrols.

Patrol has a much stronger LSD in the rear, and coil flex is extremly better than standard leaf

As above i would tend to lean toward the patrol.. suspension options being one reason(coil or leaf). However also over time i have seen the difference between the two in the way of rust-prone areas. I understand that the inner roof of the Patrol has a different setup to that of the Cruiser, and is less prone to rust problems.

I have both vehicles and the Tojo 78 is deffinately more capable stock, basically due to groud clearence. As soon as you start modifing, the Patrol is a clear winner. 5 link rear, stronger gearbox, decent front diff, real LSD, great power steering, 16"x8" rims std. I'm kinda sorry I bought a 78 now. It does have fantastic visability thou, especially jacked.
