Keep my 350 MQ or buy a GQ TI

Post by kc_ksom »

Im tossing up what to do.
On 1 hand I have an old MQ owes me around 7k, very capable 4x4 now (well sort of) its straight LPG, 350 chev, engineers, 35in claws, 2 body, 2 in springs, standard rust  CD, amp, Alloys, 12 months rego, etc........ Looks cool...reliable, but Farking rides rough....... Suspension seats are now in my posession, could well be in there very soon.

or buy a really GAY 1990, 140km LWB GQ TI 1 owner TD42, with heaps of extras like Locked diff, snorkle, towbar, bullbar, power windows, sunroof.etc.... imaculate condition.. will owe me 12k. IT will also look GAY... it has a huge high roof on it aswell  ... This fella brought it brand spanker from nissan in 1990, and looked after it....It could make for a very nice off roader, tourer, camper, everyday car.

Im realy stuck, what yous rekon....

Casey

Been there and done that....

Sold my fully kitted MK SWB for a 94 LWB TD42 GQ Patrol with all the good gear owned by a nice little older gentleman.......

The GQ won't be doing all I did with the MK but shit is it nicer to drive in....LONG LIVE COIL SUSPENSION.....

Will do family dutied for a few years and tour with it when kids get a little older....

You really have to make your mind up what you want......Do you want a basher or a tourer/come basher....

That is true, but his MQ looks schmick. If you can deal with the rough ride, then who cares.

At least he knows it's history, and it's capable and it doesnt need much more done to it.

If I was you, I'd buy a 5k boat and enjoy it.

Keep the MQ and do a coil conversion

You should be able to pick up a pair of GQ diffs for around a grand, a stripped GQ chasis from the wreckers for under a grand. You Just grind all the suspension mounts of your truck, and the chasis from the wreckers. Weld the GQ mounts on to your truck and youre done. As long as you can read a tape measure you shouldnt have any probs. It doesnt matter if you cant weld either- you'll be pretty good by the time you finish :D

I heard of a dude that had a leaf sprung GU ute, and he did a coil conversion (rear only) in one weekend, and it cost him around $500.

MQ and GQ chassis are different widths........

Not sure you can just weld perches and stuff and off you go....

Want coils get a GQ it will be easier than trying to reinvent the wheel.

If u swap GQ mounts around, thats all well and good.....

but u would want longer links if u were going to that trouble, and therfore probably different upper link designs like triangulated uppers, which requires new mounts and cross member anyway.....

depends on wat u want in a rig as to wat u should do.

if u want a offroader, with cheap to replace parts and easy as piss to work on....
keep the chev MQ far betta than stock already.

if ya want a tourer, something for the road ks far more than offroad, that will fit the groceries in the back when u go shopping, have all the kids and be confy...
get the GQ ;)

A wise man once said rather than wrote:Better the devil you know than the devil you dont.

and ......

another wise man wrote: look dudes, ppl trade in their rubbish on some-elses rubbish every day, why else would you trade in a car unless its fawked, you dont just sell it because its in mint condition do ya!, so its just a question of which pile of rubbish you perfer, the one that your used to or the new pile with new and exciting and sometimes even more expensive things to ponder about

Keep the MQ

keep the MQ - looks the goods... GQ prices will keep on falling eventually...

besides... you'll be complainin about the lack of power in the TD42 compared to your 350...

more money down the drain to spruce up the TD42 so it'll end up owing you a LOT more down the track...

whoa mann saw that thing for the second time today. between sturt mall and market place. that things looks sweet as. the misses cant beleive its the same ( well... from a womans point of veiw ) as mine ( mineis the one with all the paint peeling off the bonnet. :D )

I have found with modded cars, its an emotional thing. a car is a car untill you pour you heart and soul into it and then its an extension of you. If you dont like it sell it. if you have to come on to this formum and ask that sort of question , then i rekon you need to talk to the misses a bit more.

Yea Pongo I know your car now

I see it a bit at the servo where your partner works. I liked the way you have your boat on top, I was going to do something like that untill I put the body lift and 35's on, It would be way to big, lol.....I diddnt know that was your car..

As far as talking to the Mrs.... She is sick of listening to me go on and on about cars, Me being a mechanic and doing up so many other shitty cars why not keep tradition and keep spending money on another shitty car , lol....
Nahh the old MQ is cool, I have some plans for it but just getting it to a road worthy state was my main concern (35's not really road legal but Im not worried about that side) The rear seat belts are next, I am thinking of fitting some truck recliner seats they have there own belt in the seat (lap sash) 3 point, instead of the plain lap belt. I would feel a little better knowing the kids will be safe.

I will be attempting to fit a Driver suspension seat in aswell, Im not sure yet as to when, but one day soon.

HEI dizzy is at home, Im just waiting on some new leads, the have to regraph the dizzy.
Straight gas research carby to go on also.

So bugger the other GQ, spend some more on the MQ 1st... lol...

Casey

Thanks fellas...
