2.8 hilux problems

Post by MICKO »

G'day , i've got a 94 2.8 t/d hilux dual cab, 'm just wondering if anyone has had any problems with a shutter when taking of in 1 st gear. it doesn't seem to be bad i ya take off slowly but floor it and it real bad. A mate has a same problem he replaced the clutch and did not fix the prob. any info would be helpful.

Also what are the pros and cons about upping the boost from 6/7 pound to 11or 12.

I had the same problem it turned out to be the centre bearing if u change it your self its not hard just make sure you mark the tail shaft were it joins to the gearbox cuase if u put it back 180 degrees out u end up with another shutter

I can answer your first problem. It will be the centre bearing on the tailshaft. Either replace it or get a one piece tailshaft made as it is a common re-ocuring problem with hilux's and the best fix is a one piece shaft.
As for the boost its not realy recomended to run that sort of boost but it has been done before with no problems. You will need to increase fuel supply from the injector pump as well as increasing the boost.

Thanks for the info . So if increasing the boost is not usually recomended , what can be done to improve performance with out spending a huge amount of money ? It has a 2.5 inch exhaust, snorkel, k&n filter. the turbo is a safari kit. Would it be best to get it dyno tuned and if so does anyone now someome good in or near brisbane.

Get it dynoed and set at around 9 if you are worried about reliability. Thats just my thoughts anyway, I`m shore somebody will say something different.

I`m thinking of having my boost increased to around 11.5 to 12 psi as I want more GOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and yes I do hate my motor

G'day Micko
If your hilux has the same clutch shutter that my last hilux (2.8 turbo) had replacing the center bearing will do nothing. Clutch on my hilux shuttered before you were even moving, just letting the pedel out. Is yours worst when cold? I found my clutch was very shuttery when cold but ok when warm. I replaced clutch and center bearing trying to fix shutter and it made no difference. Ended up just putting up with it.

Last hilux ran 10.5 psi (DTS turbo). No problems in 80,000kms. Turn up the boost. :P

Yea, I had the Shuddering about 6 months after installing my turbo, the cluth just fried, not worn out, but it created alot of hot spots and would create a big shudder on take off.

When it would get real bad i would perposly slip the clutch for a lil while and it would stop for a few days, howerver i wouldnt recommend this, unless ya plan on putting a new one in real soon!! ;)

The centre bearing is also a big problem, and easy to check so try that first! easy fixed!

As for the boost, Im running 10pound (dyno tuned) with no problems, and it was installed with 200000km on the clock. My cous hilux running 12 with no problems either!

Get it tuned properly and wind it up!!

Checked your engine and transmission mounts? Not just a visual check; you will need to load up the mounts to see if they are cracked or split.

A mate did the Centre bearing, Gearbox mounts and engine mounts and it is still there. The Mechanic sitting next to me said you might need to machine the pressure plate.
