Welding Front Diff Hints.

Firstly I've done a quick search and found this thread:

It wasn't that much help. Anyone know of a site/thread that kinda has step by step instructions or something along those lines any ways.

I can remember someone saying something about grinding flats on the spider gears and insterting a bit of metal strap and welding that into place.

Any help would be good.

Mike H's old site was great, but alas - gone. Maybe if he gets on he can help more. Murray welded his.

From memory, what you described with grinding the gears flat was right. Have a chat to a diff guy.

This is purely from memory...

They grinded down the internal teeth and inserted a solid piece of steel which was then welded in place.

You'd have to do some serious torque to break that!

Well diff centre I don't know. However for the complete diff (internals and housing complete) in adelaide they range from $350 to $935!! I got mine for $350 and laughed at the guy who wanted $935. I didn't weld it either just put it back in as it was as I spoke to a diff place here in adelaide and he strongly suggested not to weld as they are already a weak diff or something.

However I do now have a spare centre (spider gears and housing thingy) so I recon I might weld that up at a later date and see how I go.

Most places seemed to want $600 for a rear diff centre when I was looking 18mths ago!

Which wrecker did you end up getting it from Dave?

hrmmm.. little more than i can afford for a while.. haha
i would only try a welded front diff if i had a spare one.

one of our customers that owns a transmission/gearbox business said they are a little weak in the front end when i was dribbling about the mods i want to do. oh well, i am sure there are plenty things that could be done if you could afford it.

Exclusive Jap - 1 Dundee Avenue, Holden Hill. The guys there are great. They pretty much have everything feroza and always at the right price. 3 month warranty on all parts too. I got my alternator from there and haven't had a problem. Strongly recommend these guys to anyone.

Dry creek auto wreckers wanted $550 and City Dismantlers wanted $850 plus GST and thats after waiting two days and six phone calls nagging them to get back to me!

Tuff - I recon that trying to mod the standard diffs would just be a waste of time due to weakness. If ya seriously wanted to mod the suspension/diffs, adapt some Bundeera or Hilux Diffs into it. Thats what I want to eventually do. One day maybe, a guys gotta have a dream... :roll:

i concur.

in brisbane there is a place called Diahatsu auto recyclers (something like that). was put onto them by one of the toyota spare parts guy's up here, the toyota dealer up here uses them for spare parts.
when i rung them about a door, front fender and idler arm they where quite helpful and i thought their pricing was good too. (must remember to get that damn idler arm too).

That's funny- I've dealt with them for a few years (over 10 actually) and always found them expensive and not very helpful?! :lol:

I only use them as a last resort.

When I had my Charade and was pricing Jap import turbo engines they were second dearest to City Dismantlers. Last time I was in there asking about Feroza parts (18mths ago) they said they didn't have Feroza stuff too.

There's a wrecker down at Lonsdale that had a few Feroza rear diffs- guess they would have fronts too; plus other bits? Can find the name if you want it.

Would the name be Oriental Wreckers? Crowey reccomended them to me but I gave them a ring and they didn't have any unfortunately. Ah well maybe next time.
