electronic ignition - 18R

Post by auto_eng »

I just bought an 82 Hilux ute and it has an 18R engine in it. Anyone changed theirs over to electronic ignition? What did you use?

I changed my Rangie to electronic ignition and it made a world of difference so I would rather do that than keep changing points/

dick smith/jaycar have a kit that can be set up to use the points as a trigger for the transistor module (or you can use a hall effect type) - it isn't as bulletproof as going full electronic but it reduces the points current down to a few mA so there is no burning/arcing on the points so they last a lot longer, and the module produces a much fatter spark.

the kit is about $60 and takes a couple of hours to put together.

if you're clever you could probably adapt the sensor doodad from another 4 cylinder car electronic distributor.

I was thinking perhaps you could adapt the electronic distributor off the 21/22R but it is probably completely different, runs off the camshaft, think the 18R one runs off the oil pump?

anyway some ideas

cheers
