ruf and hilux fronts on rear

Post by flyinwall »

ive done a search but couldn't find what i was looking for
i am after info on rears up front and hilux front springs on the back of my lwb trayback has anyone done this? What are the advantages (apart from more travel) Is it a smoother ride? Will it increase the wb much? What is the easiest way to mount them (front and rear)?

I have been considering same thing, possibly for the same reasons.
But I haven't looked into it properely, yet, so will be watching this topic.

is it a smoother ride?
id say it will be all depends on your final spring setup

willl it increase wb much?
depends where u put the hangers

whats the easiest way to mount them?
RUF will bolt up with a longer shackle

i did RUF a coupla weeks ago and my shackles are only 110mm long hole to hole but i drilled new rear mounting holes 20mm back fron the original ones. this will leave ya front diff almost in the factory position. but the best thing to do while it is all apart is to drill new locating holes in the diff perch's and botom plates and move the diff forward 20mm. it wont affect steering at all. you will however have to extend your brakelines. (get swift caliper hoses)

built4thrashing before i get the swift caliper hoses i have to get the diffs for them to mount to (i got 1lt nt diffs with drum brakes) but get this i got quoted from a major 4x4 wreckers (which will remail nameless) the sum of $630 each for front and rear diffs and then at another 4x4 wrecker (less than 2 km away) i got quoted $300 each so i wonder where i am going oh and the 2nd wreckers have a zook lwb trayback with a 4AGZE in it and he is going to put a turbo on it as well as the supercharger so there will be a twin charged lwb zook getting around (if you go to LCMP you will know which zook it is its GREEN(no its not mine)))

If you're doing RUF do a chassis extension and move the diff forward, This will give you better clearance for tyres, better climbing abilities although depending on tyre size you may have to trim your headlight buckets a bit.

If the Hilux springs are a tight squeze into the zook hangers, make new ones or use Hilux ones. Thicker rubber bushes means better flex (generally). If they are tight to start with they will not flex as much.

PM Mud4by (the Suziworx guy) he's got some 5.12 ratio NT diffs and i'm pretty sure they're disc brake fronts too.

that's a bit booty ain't it  I guess in theory shaving 2-3 mm off each side wouldn't hurt it :?

Still wouldn't do it though :D

yeah you'd think that it would cause the rest of the wider spring to have a levering effect on the thinner area - probably cause a lot of stress...

when i do the lux front all round we will make our own perches using lasercutting and welding =)

I've got 2" BL and 2" spring and thinking on going with this idea for my LWB ute
question i got is since i got a BL will i have to still cut into the body to do the ruf :S ...

also i was thinking on just fitting the ruf and compensating the differant lenght spring with a longer shackle is this plausable?

how much should you set back the rear perch

You can just redrill the rear of the front springmount and compensate with a larger shackle. This does work but the critics will say your not getting the full effect of having a RUF.

My buildup has pictures of this but its not a LWB. Its the same though.
Check christovers thread also and note how he redrilled the springpad. I did this also so the front axle is moved forward.

I have done both, Move the rear perch back 2" or redrill and also drill the spring pad. Works ok, maybe not to the best of the chassis ext way but at least this looks legal and they have not said anything about it.

I am going to look for some possibly early 808 mazda springs or f20 shatsu springs to play with.
