big fat drainpipe (steel, concrete) rag to cover the checkerplate, piece of 4x2 and a mallet.
cut the plate as best you can, then lay the checkerplate over the pipe to the right angle for the bend/curve, then flog the piece of wood in the right place with the mallet.

The shape in the rear 3/4 of a sierra is a bit more complex than you think - most commercial rear corners have a cut and weld in then somewhere ( the spot varies) so they can have a bit of a bend in them becuse the rear corner is convex not straight up and down.
IMHO checkerplate looks hack and makes for lost capability ( no, really) because when you are sitting on it it grabs the tree/rock/bank/car and will make it harder to drive off of. Also, aluminium galls so when you are sitting against a rock it will drag and gouge. the rock will bite into it, again, making it harder to drive off.If it was me, I would go with about 2mm(not over) steel plate as this will let the car slide off of obstacles easily.
