Heys Guys, have a 2.4 TD Surf (2LT-E), thats done 220,000 km.
A) Kicks around and smokes on cold start-up, even though I just changed glow plugs. Any ideas on how to fix it?
B) When I change into 2nd gear after revving out 1st, I get a puff of WHITE smoke from the exhaust. Also when giving a rev on downchanges.
On the hoist and runnin thru the gears it does it in every gear. Had the injectors "done" 120,000 km ago ( whether just needles, or needles & seats, I don't know).
Been told white smoke is excess/unburnt fuel, possibly from leaky injectors? Can anyone tell me if this is so?

excess or unburnt fuel will come out as black smoke. White smoke is usually water in the fuel. Check your fuel filter it should have a small tap on the bottom, open it and drain out any water in there. I do this every few tank loads.
On some big diesels that I have worked on white smoke can also be caused by too much air ( burning too lean) but I have not come across this in a small diesel engine, but I suppose it could happen. ( by big I mean marine diesels, usually over 5 litres capacity per cylinder.)
Also if you are burning oil you will get blue smoke.

On the weekend just gone, having not started it for a couple days, and given the cold nights, she belched out massive quantities of white smoke. Condensate no doubt.
Took her to the servo, filled up and chucked in a bottle of Spitfire fuel treatment, and voila... end of story. No more smokey smokey.
Also opened up a crack on the radiator, but that's another story!

But she doesn't bubble the coolant, and hasn't used a drop of water either. Will drain the water trap tomorrow. Keep the advice comin......

Pat, are you loosing any oil at all between Oil changes ?
My surf puffed white smoke last year, it was the front seals on the turbo, the oil was being burnt and appears as white if it's the front seals.
Just an idea ? you can check by pulling off your crossoever pipe from turbo to inlet and see if it's coated in oil, if it is, another way to check it is deffinetly turbo, hold a white rag infront of the outlet of the turbo and rev the engine, if you get splattered it'll be your front rings. That is if your not loosing coolant, this could be the other option.

Well...
I do run a non-recirculating catch can, but did noticed the slightest coating of oil in the x-over pipe. It wasn't black, the steel was still visible.....
