Vitara 1.6 cold run problem

Hi guys,

I'm looking for your valuable opinions on a minor problem I'm having with my early (1989) 1.6 carby Vitara.

When it's stone cold, it still starts quite readily, so that's no problem, however, I have to hold the throttle open, or it stalls. It runs really roughly, and seems to smell quite rich for about 1.5 to 2 minutes, when all of a sudden it starts to run really smoothly, and I can release the throttle and step out to let it warm up on its own.

In my previous Vitaras, they ran at about 2500rpm when cold (which to me, sounds really fast when you're listening to it...being cold & all), and gradually worked their way down to the normal idle temp, once warm, but this one doesn't.

The choke butterfly rolls over into the cold position, as it should, by the way.

I suspect it could be a problem with the thermo-expansion material that pushes the throttle open just a crack, via the linkages, but I haven't had the opportunity to check this out yet. I hope to do this in the morning (having just bought the car).

Any advice, or experiences in this regard would be appreciated.

Sounds like something stuck within the choke mechanism, but if it wont idle when it's warm then it potentially isnt a choke issue.

Tried turning down the idle speed and see if it makes any difference yet?

Also if the timing is out a mile that will cause stupid idle speeds and running rough. You may find that the dizzy has been out and put back in misaligned, so that you might have to static timing check it first.
