Brake calipers

As long as the brake rotor is the vented type, yes.

There are two caliper types available, the earlier without cooling ribs on the outer half, and the later type with the cooling ribs. The later type has larger pistons than the earlier and gives better braking performance. In landcruisers the larger type is found in the 1990+ 75 series, I think in the Hilux it started in 1988, but I may be wrong. The later type can be fitted to the earlier swivel housing but it may foul the wheel centre because of its larger size.

thanks beanz, just had a look and mine is a solid rotor unfortunately ...is it possible to convert to vented and use the later model calipers like you say?

Yes, get landcruiser rotors and they'll fit. For a 1980 and older Hilux, use 76-80 40 series rotors. For 1981 and newer, use 81-89 40/60/75 series rotors.

thanks mate, i'm pretty sure theres a set of vented 40 series brakes sittin in the shed, will have to give them a try

I think its not just the calliper and disc that needs changing, but the swivel housing aswell.
The later than 1990 lux or 75 calliper has bigger pistons, so a set of them will make a big d4ence.

The swivel housing makes a bit of a difference in terms of how the caliper is centered over the disc, but it will physically bolt on. If you do not change the swivel, the disc is about 3mm off center like in this picture. Not big enough to worry in my opinion.

Some people have placed a washer between the caliper and the swivel housing tabs to recenter it.

The later swivel housing in the 1990+ landcruisers takes a larger diameter ball on the diff ends and the seals, etc. may not suit the earlier diff. How is the later Hilux swivel? We did not get the RFS Hilux after 1985

ive put later callipers on the earlier vented discs and they bolt straight on with a small trim of the backing plate.... they have 35mm pistons x 4 as opposed to 22 and 35 in earlier...and pads are longer.
All for better brakes :-)

Yes, both my HJ75 and FJ40 have had these calipers fitted. At least the ones on my 40 series have four 41 mm pistons and the braking power is significantly better especially with large tyres. I never measured the pistons I used on the 75 but IIRC they were the same size.

Did you sell your crawler box, Andrew? Wish I haven't had so many large purchases lately . . .
